credit card declined at Amazon ??

Up until a few years back Barclaycard had both Visa and MasterCard versions.....which was great, as I had one for personal use and (at that time) the other, though a personal card, I used entirely for my employment reclaimable expenses.

Then BC dropped MasterCard so in/voluntarily ended up with 2 Visa cards.

As for Amazon I did take one of their promoted cards, operated by New Day, a few months back and have limited my usage because I was concerned about their comms to remind me when due........so unless I get a MasterCard I am stuck(?) with the New Day card!

I can remember, a few years ago, booking a room with one hotel chain and being charged a fee for using a mastercard credit card, how things change

Merchants were banned from passing fees to consumers

So many upped their prices to all customers to cover the extra costs they (the retailers) were incurring. Another sneaky one was to introduce contactless at no charge to the retailers then start adding the charge when it (contactless) became mainstream.

Visa are still hoping to reach an agreement with Amazon so I will hold on the the last minute.

I might change and get the £20 they are offering and then change back if they settle with Visa ;). There doesn’t seem to be any condition against that. :).

I got all set to do that (having found a qualifying purchase that I had intended to make sometime) but then realised one of the conditions is you must change to a default non Visa Credit card to qualify for the £20 — ie excludes Debit cards, which mine is :(.

I changed to a debit card and received the £20. I suppose they could take it back though!

EDIT: Having looked at various newspaper reports etc online, debit cards are included in the scheme.

I don't know if I should ignore this or look into it further as Amazon are still accepting my RBS card and I've received no more warning messages.

How quickly did that happen? I added a debit card and. made it the default but have seen no sign of the promise £20 so far :(.

The T&C in the email reads:

  1. This Offer is by invitation only. You may only be invited to benefit from this Offer by Amazon by email, push notification or a message on Amazon.co.uk. The Offer only applies to Amazon.co.ukcustomers who have updated their default payment method for Prime to a non-Visa Credit card in response to such an invitation.
(My bold.) It’s all very closely defined. Newspapers are careless about accuracy.

I added my debit card on 17 November and £20 was deducted from an order I made on thre 18th.

Found the email:

We’re writing to notify you of an upcoming change to Amazon.co.uk.

Starting 19 January, 2022, we will unfortunately no longer accept Visa credit cards issued in the UK, due to the high fees Visa charges for processing credit card transactions. You can still use debit cards (including Visa debit cards) and non-Visa credit cards like Mastercard, Amex, and Eurocard to make purchases. Please update your default payment method now, or add one of these new, eligible payment methods if you do not have one.

Thanks! Yes I’ve had a succession of emails like that and the latest one Xmas eve says the same as you’ve quoted:

You can still use debit cards (including Visa debit cards), non-Visa credit cards like Mastercard, Amex, and Eurocard, or Visa credit cards issued outside the UK. We’ll give you £20 off your next eligible purchase the first time you update your default payment method with a qualifying card, subject to the terms and conditions at the end of this email.

But then has T&Cs in a footnote that specifically do not mention credit cards as valid for the £20 — I’ll wait and see!

I have an Amazon card and have had it for a few years. It is the only card I use for all my online purchases.

@sphexx

Have you actually ordered anything since you added a card? The £20 is deducted from an order, you don't actually get credit in your account.

Yes I made an order and went through all the steps except final “click” but no discount was added. It may sort itself out in time :). It’s quite restrictive in what counts, it has be sold by Amazon U.K. and fulfilled by Amazon U.K. , various goods excluded. I guess the biggest category that is “valid” would be new books.

Edit to add: the T&C do say “You will receive an email confirming that the Credit has been added to your account.” and I haven’t receive such, so I’ll just have to wait.

I suppose my current suspicion is that the T&C says:

I clicked on the link in the email to change the card but there was no mention of the £20 in the ensuing process!

The continuing saga! It’s not all that interesting, I only post for information to others.

So, I made a purchase (unrelated to getting this £20) for £12, no evidence of discount at checkout so I changed the payment to my UK VISA card (from my now default Master card) and completed.

Got nagged again about the VISA so clicked to select Mastercard and “updated’.

As soon as I got the confirmation email for the purchase I got another “congrats, you’ve just earned a £20 credit”

So then made another purchase and got my £20 … finally!

Something evidently wasn’t completing on the several other occasions I set the Mastercard to the default :(.

Email from Amazon this morning:

The expected change regarding the use of Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk will no longer take place on January 19. We are working closely with Visa on a potential solution that will enable customers to continue using their Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk. Should we make any changes related to Visa credit cards, we will give you advance notice. Until then, you can continue to use Visa credit cards, debit cards, Mastercard, American Express, and Eurocard as you do today.Thank you for being an Amazon customer.

I’ve just posted that in WCMUT. Have switched default back to Visa without problems, so £20 up :).
