If you attend the ecourse Live, it's free. If you download or stream it later you pay.

From Zack's Course Description:

"I’m going to be teaching a studio lighting class. White seamless and beyond. Models, bands, etc. In order to maximize this for as many people as possible to see it live and for free I will be teaching the class over a weekend. Probably about six hours of live training with live Q&A and critique."

"I don’t do very well speaking straight to a camera so I’ll be doing some sort of twitter something or another looking for five people to come to the class, in person, for free. I do better if I have some real people to interact with but I’ll make damn sure that the viewer’s perspective isn’t just one of a camera on sticks in the back of a standard workshop. More details on that once we nail down the date."

I just recieved the email from creative live on this and thought I'd share.

If you don't like Zack, don't like the timing, don't like that it's free Live but costs to download or any of another thousand things not to like, don't shoot the mesenger, just don't sign up ;)

Huge Zack fan, not only his style but his inspiration and honesty. I'm shooting a wedding that weekend so will probably need to DL later but I must confess i think it may be worthwhile.

Thanks! I just signed up too! Should be able to catch most of this with it being on US time.

just signed up

thanks

Watching the live preliminary talk between chase and zack at the moment.

Unfortunately, it isn't good, I get audio quite constant but video is non existent - probably one second of movement in every 30 seconds or so. I'm on 20 meg. Maybe a victim of their success.

Hope they sort it out by Friday, otherwise very disappointing....

Kris glad I aint the only one with issues, I have seen they will be retransmitting laters

Thought the strobist tweet was funny...

'i aint heard of me either...'

CJ Live goes via UStream, which is a different service to CreativeLive.

For those that haven't seen the add for "Workshop World"

And the proposed agenda

All start times are PDT (or -8 GMT)

Friday June 11th – 1:30pm – 4:30pm’ish / 5:30pm’ish
• My personal philosophy of having a studio space
• Considerations for getting a space of your own or turning a space you have into a studio space.
• The basics of exposure when using flash in studio. We will be using hotshoe flashes and strobes.
• Working with multiple lights and working with different lighting ratios
• Using a light meter and how to figure it out on the fly without a meter
• Overview of the modifiers we will be using over the weekend. Those include…
••• Straight flash
••• Umbrellas
••• Softboxes
••• Octabanks
••• Beauty dish
••• Ring flash
••• Grids
••• Flags/Silks/Reflectors
••• DIY modifiers
• Q&A

Saturday June 12th :: 10am – 1pm’ish
• The many uses of white seamless. I’ll be walking you through the entire process of shooting on a white seamless and getting the most out of one simple background
• Post production on the white seamless
• Q&A
• (lunch break somewhere between 1pm and 2pm.)
• Building a set. It will already be in place. I’ll just talk about the basic modular set pieces that went into making it.
• Grip equipment. How to put stuff together and do stuff with that stuff.
• Slowly moving away from the seamless and onto other background choices. IE: Fabric/Walls/Sets
• Working with subjects. Interaction and Posing. (I’ve had a lot of questions about this so I’m spending a lot of time on it.)
• Musicians. Duo and Trio. Group shots plus individuals. White seamless and other backgrounds + a simple set.
• Q&A
• In order to conclude in time to rebroadcast over night we can only teach for 10 hours a day. So the latest this day will run is 8pm. Don’t know if it will go that long or not.

Sunday June 13th :: 10am
• Quick recap of previous day and previous information about exposure. Not going to spend a lot of time on this but just a quick recap for those just joining.
• If I don’t cover the grip equipment on Saturday I’ll most likely do that Sunday morning.
• Art Direction! I will be pulling people from the live audience and giving them assignments to see what problems they run into and guide them through the process.
• More shooting. Different modifiers. Improv.
• Q&A
• (lunch break somewhere between 1pm and 2pm.)
• Working with a four piece band. Individuals and group shot.
• More shooting. Whatever we decide to do making sure I’ve used all the modifiers from the list above.
• Q&A

dude wanna translate that into english times cos I failed for the last one

You telling me you're at university, studying engineering and can't do a simple time zone calculation?

Seattle is Pacific Time which is - 8 hours difference to the UK.

Friday June 11th – 1:30pm Seattle = 9:30pm UK Time.

Saturday June 12th :: 10am Seattle = 6:00pm UK Time.

Sunday June 13th :: 10am Seattle = 6:00pm UK Time.

Only time it's tricky is when the US and Europe change to/from Daylight Saving times on different dates.

They are rerunning the events soon after they finish for p p l :) on other time zones.

Thanks, for someone who knows nothing about studio lighting (i.e. me!), this looks perfect.

yes, but I blame th fact that I'm an idiot :p

Very interesting so far, they called out my Twitter earlier  (@stevebeddoes)

So many similarities to his onelight dvd, but that's to be expected.

So, all staying up late to see this then? Even later tomorrow I think.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

zzzzzz, is he done with aperture and flash power soon?

watching it now. Great part for beginners - can't wait for more advanced stuff

I disagree. Id rather gel the strobe/softbox than go to a smaller flash. Retains the bare bulb.

Still interesting though.....

Looking forward to tomorrow a lot.

depends on what kinda light you're working with, for a constrained source (snoot ect) massively not an issue but for other stuff I do see your point

You can get big sheets of 3 stop gels from Formatt filters in Wales (just down the road!) for a couple of quid. My Canons wont fill a large softbox.

So yeah, I agree with you. I think. I dont have a grid for my Canons though.

I need to get round to it, reading hot shoe diaries so vvv tempted to ditch my planned einstein and pack for like 3 580exIIs (both like 900 nicker) but well it'd be 1 580ex now and one later and one later :p

Some interesting bits in this first session, defiantly more for beginners though - I'm not one to complain but I'm getting a little bored at some points. Maybe I'm craving some practical :)

Yes all old stuff for me but useful to go over it just so you've not missed anything.

the maths is getting to me a bit, but I have seen onelight + I have done this ocf stuff before but meh

actually the chatting about studios and the philosophy side of his studio I found v interesting forgot to mention that :p

I'm watching it and I do like Zack, but not really enjoying it tbh. The key notes speech that he did in Utah a while ago is really good, but just not feeling this. I appreciate that it's mainly walking through some of the concepts for the more practical stuff tomorrow; so I'll try and catch that.

David 1701

Only get one ttl gun.

For the rest, Id get the new Yongnuo 560 thingy and save what, £300 each?

Don't be surprised if eventually you want something more powerful. McNally makes it look easy, but he doesn't have to pay for his Nikon guns, his misses works for Nikon USA.

Yea I found the studio bit pretty interesting to... now if only I could find that tape measure :D, defiantly looking forward to tomorrows session.

Dont pay for the reruns, just the downloads. I doubt if they will do another rerun though, so catch it.

His philosophy on just 'get a studio, no matter what' was worthwhile.

Why clap it three times? One is enough to sync audio, aint it?

my small amount of dicking around with canon ttl makes me think it could be amazing for weddings + my yn-460 does not compare to my 430 quality wise switches off and recycles slow, no zoom ect
