Creating Websites ClikPic or otherwise....

Hi

As my collection of photo's is increasing, more and more people are asking to have a look. I have decided the easiest way to get one up and running is to use clikpic.

Does anyone have anyother recommendations? I would prefer to be able to use a template rather than write a whole site from scratch as I have seen our web developers and I don;t want to turn out to be like them :bang:

With ClikPic is it posisble to set a secure area, so that photo's which aren't fit for general eyes (such as studio work) can only be accessed with a password?

ClikPic is a doddle to use and has a secure area. I started with the cheapest package but have since upgraded to take advantage of FTP for bulk uploads for my event pics.

Occasionally the site does go down (normally a Sunday evening for some reason!) However I took advantage of this and got a free upgrade when I complained that my customers could access pics taken at an event that day. They were very quick to apologise.

I find them OK but I am looking around for others at the moment such as Peak Imaging (but there prints are pricey!)and may even consider getting a site designed for the future.

Does Flikr not have secure area's for password prtotected viewing?

I was with Clikpic for a year but found their upload service a bit slow, at the time you either had to upload each image individually or if you bulk uploaded the images had to assigned individually, either way way it was a time consuming and frustrating process especially when I had 200-300 images to upload every week from an event. Things may have changed now but that is how it was when i was there.

I now use photium.com and they have been good, more options as to the layout and design and the bulk uploading is piece of cake. Having said that I am looking at possibly designing my own site as neither of the two above are what I really want.

For a template design Photium is better than Clikpic IMO.
 
I use clikpic, as said before, quite expensive.
The other things that sometimes bug me is the limited size of image you can upload (800pix wide max ithink) and also no right click disable, so although the prints are small people can still nick them.
The other site i use is fotopic, really great once set up nicely.

I use Clikpic & to be honest am pretty happy with them - I'm interested in photography not web design so their easy to use templates suit my requirements.
I also like the simple, no adverts look - viewers can concentrate on the photographs !!

I would also echo the previous comments about the rather restricted image sizes though, would be nice to display larger images

I use a super online service called Zenfolio - for an example, please see gallery in my signature. I did some research into several gallery apps prior to deciding to use Zenfolio. It's certainly one of the best, and at $40 per year - it's a snip too.

Disabling right click does not stop people nicking your pictures - just open a second browser window and drag the pic on to it.

Your pics are really nice - but why don't you put your name/contact details on the watermark rather than advertising clikpic?

I think the first few had their watermark until I did my own one, the later ones have pgpictures, (i hope) :)

Yep - looked at more of them now - some do have your name - which is much better I think.
 
Hi Karen - I see your site in the email notification, but not in the thread - weird!

Excellent site by the way, very nice colour scheme and aesthetic.
 
I have my site with Clikpic, just the basic 60 photo one at the minute. Like it has already been mentioned, although creating a website is pretty easy nowadays, I am lazy and went for the template offer of having clikpic - it's all done for you and you just add the pictures and words.
 
Just to add my 2pence to this thread..

I've been using the Gallery2 software, which is free. It's a bit clunky but it's got a mirriad of upload options and build in commerce tools as well, as well as watermarking / comments / etc.

I also use the Dreamhosts hosts, who give ridiculous amounts of space and bandwidth that increases every month (mine goes up 1gb of bandwidth a week and 16gb of space a week! :bonk::woot:)

I've made a promo code for Dreamhost if anyone's interested, use the code 'TALKPHOTOGRAPHY' and that should get you at least $20 off your bill, more for larger accounts.

I did look at other sites, but then when I compare it with the gb's of space and bandwidth I'm getting it doesn't seem to add up :shrug:
 
I currently use Clikpic and its ok. It does seem a little expensive and the upload times are sometimes terrible but on the plus side they have started watermarking everything.

I think I will look at getting a website designed at some point in the future but for the time being Clikpic will do me just fine.

I was one of the very first to sign up to Clikpic. It has got easier over the years to upload and manage photos. The watermarking process is fine. My problem is the price to upgrade to the next level is way too high for me, and I am looking around for somewhere to let wedding couples view their proofs. Picasa is looking promising.
 
I use ifp3 for my web site, it's all flash based, which some people hate but I use it regardless. It's cost a fair bit but you can have private galleries and all links to Paypal for payments.

Hi Gilly - can do this with the $40 per year package with Zenfolio. You can password protect groups, galleries or even individual photographs if required.
 
I've just put together a very quick site using zenfolio while sat at work just using a few of my images that I had on my work PC here:

It is very simple to use and at only $40 for a year I think it is great value for money too and I will definitely be upgrading from the free trial to the full version :thumbs:
 
Just a quick comment on the watermarking...

Personally I don't bother - if people want to use your images a watermark won't prove effective in stopping them unless it's very large & covers most of your image, which then pretty much spoils any genuine viewing experience.

The only true way to protect images is NOT to post them on the WWW.

Just my thoughts

You have your images on Ebay watermarked Simon! (and very reasonably priced!)
 
smugmug is fantastic, unlimited photos/bandwidth etc, great support community, lots of custimaztion that you can do. pm me if you want a referral code for money off
