I have made a few websites in the past but never a photography website. I have read the sticky but I am still a little unsure.

So I am starting from the beginning.. were do I start?

Is it best to make one from scratch? or use a template?

How do I host my photos?

How would I got about people buying my photos off my website?

Please could you help me with all these questions I have and any other useful information you could offer me.

All your help is much appreciated.

Thanks.. Matt.

It really depends how much you know about designing sites!
How do I host my photos?
you can either use a free host such as www.freeweb7.com or a paid for service such as www.123-reg.co.uk/

you can link Paypay in to your site, I have never done it so couldn't tell you how!

If I am honest I havn't really designed a site from scratch before I have always used built in templates that you have to select.

HTML & CSS aren't too difficult to learn if you've got a bit of time on your hands, otherwise stick with a template.

I know a bit of CSS and HTML just not enough to make a good looking website.. I have a program called Front Page which allows me to create like borders, boxes and set background images and other stuff. This then turns it into a HTML code. I have dreamweaver which I know fully how to use.

Its just what sites to use to copy the code to to make the site. How do I put my photos onto it without having to change the HTML code again.

Thanks for the help

You have a few choices - you can learn a shed load of stuff, which is fun, but very hard work, or you can contact a designer and get the whole thing done properly. As a designer, my recommendation to you will be biased. What ever choice you go for, feef free to call me up, and I can at least point you in the right direction. We have done a lot of photographers sites, most of which sell prints

If you know how to use dreamwaever the you shouldn't be using Front Page!

Also, in a recent PC Pro there was a tutorial on how to insert a javascript photo album into your webpage. Cutting and pasting of free code with a tiny bit of editing I think.

Seconded! dreamweaver is far superior!

there is also a something called lightbox that might be of interest... google it.

Thanks all for the help.

@Richard I would be very greatfull if you could point me in the right direction as what I have read in your posts you seem to know how the photography business works

I do not mind paying for services that I am going to have to use for my site.

Thanks all once again for all the help. keep it coming :)

Will be a pleasure, give me a call - im quite easy to track down, I work at Place of design in Nottingham

I think I am going to make my own site, I need a place to host my site, what do you recommend?

I have found this as it is UK based and is cheap, what do you think? I would prefer something which allows me to make a one of payment or a yearly payment which is quiet cheap. As I want to see how it goes to start off with.

thanks.

I've been using Dataflame for a while and would recommend them, it also works out better with them to pay annually.

From past experience, I would be very careful when choosing web hosting. Firstly check forums such as http://www.webhostingtalk.com before making a decision on who to go with. I use http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk for my sites and cannot recommend them highly enough.

They do seem a little more expensive than the other recommendations here but their support is second to none. I've been with them for quite a few years and host approx 6 websites with them. On occasions I have needed support they answer the support ticket within 15 mins, and usually with the correct resolution.

I would also endorse Dreamweaver over Frontpage and agree with others that it takes time to learn enough to produce a good looking site.

Also, bear in mind that technical ability/skill has little to do with good design...

I use freeola for my hosting and know several others that do to. No issues so far for me
