Creating a mask from a layer?

I can't for the life of me remember how to do this :bang:

I've duplicated the original layer and played with levels, brightness and contrast to give me a great black and white image perfect to turn into a mask. I now want to do just that, turn it into a mask that I can then apply to the original (or rather another copy of the original layer). Easy, yes... but I can't remember how

Ctrl/apple click the thumbnail in the layers pallet. Is that what you mean?
