Creating a black base layer (PS5)

Will someone please save me from destroying my laptop and tell me how to create a base layer please? Im trying to batch process some star trails with an action (i think ive sussed that bit) ive downloaded but need to create a black base layer the same size as the 43 tiff files i have in the batch. Please help me. I bet its so simple but i just havnt got a clue and google isnt helping!:shake:

Am I right in thinking you want to create a new layer and fill it with black? Maybe I've understood it wrong and I'm insulting your intelligence :P
 
When you have your layers open in PS click the new layer icon on the layers palette, edit fill with black and drag it to the bottom of the layer stack, if the bottom layer is locked you'll need to unlock it first by double clicking on it and clicking ok to the pop up box.

Ok guys, thanks for the help. My problem is when i open PS there are no options available. I think in the end i clicked new and somehow pulled it off. Ive managed to load the action and create my star trail but its an epic fail as i thought due to clouds. I just wanted to learn the method first though so thankyou.
With regards to opening a new layer there was no option for that. Why is that? I had the setting to essentials at the top right.

Go to window/layers if the layer palette isn't showing, the new layer icon is second from the right.

Thanks very much.:) Ive just opened photoshop and im sure the layers palette has disappeared. When i click on design at the top right it appears but i cant select the options at the bottom of the palette.:( The layers options at the top tool bar are there when i open a photo and are useable but the palette doesnt appear. It did until the other day so im confused!

Don't want to spoil it for you but have you tried using The Startrails application? It's a peice of software that does it all for you without the need for photoshop etc.

Have a look at http://startrails.de/html/software.html it's so simple to use even I've managed to do one using 277 jpegs from one night.

Well thanks very much mate! I'll check that out now! Funnily enough ive just been messing about with the startrails action in ps5.
