I've made a couple like that, I've got some ideas for real apps, but its just a case of finding the time to code them up.

There's a great series of lectures on iTunes U.

Lol!

I have my first proper app planned out it will be an educational app for pre schoolers and I have a perfect subject to try it out on. My daughter. Did some looking around and found a gap for the exact idea I had, I don't really plan to make money on it, more just create apps to teach my kids things the way I want them to learn without annoying American accents on all the sound files!

excellent, a blue screen for Apple :p

An app, for teaching kids their key words, would be great.

Let me know when it's finished

Whats involved in creating an app. You get the SDK and then what? Do you need to be a techie to do this or is it really simple, like putting a website together in iweb?

Depends. How good are your programming skills. Natively you are supposed to use objective c which is very complex code. Personally I'm using flash and the flash packager for iPhone in flash cs5 because I know actionscript.

The app you are making will dictate how complex the code is. I would say it's a lot more complicated than using iWeb though.

Oh. My extent of programming was doing turbo pascal 20years ago as part of my a levels. Not a chance for me then!

well, completed and submitted my first app today, bit of a faff but its in review now so we'll see how long it takes and if it gets approval. exciting

Let us know when it's approved and of course what it's called.

will do!!!!

its a simple spinner that picks between a man and a woman, thats it!!

lol, this morning i was laying in bed with the wife and we were debating who should get up at 6.30am with our son. Bingo, that was the idea. screenshot

Wasn't there some kind of battle between Apple and Adobe regarding the use of Flash on Iphones? I thought Apple restricted the use of Flash on Iphones.. i guess im wrong..

They did at first. Then they relaxed the rules and apps developed using adobes iPhone packager were then accepted. A lot of apps on the app store are actually built in flash interestingly

.Well I had confirmation my app was approved today woohoo. within 24 hrs you'll be able to download and give me 59p!!! well 40p actually to me

i added a bunch of other modes to the spinner including a custom mode where you can define your own segments. its very simple to be honest was just doing something small to learn the process, I have another spelling app well on its way

Well done.

Will certainly be interested in a spelling app for the kids, so keep at it.

there are loads already but this will be specifically for the dolch nouns and finding the missing letter, it's practically done just need to add some more sound feedback and also there's a bit of an orientation bug with flash content on iOS that im trying to sort out

ok so my app is now in the store, you can find it by searching for Custom Spinner. The icon looks like this

pm me if you want a free promo code to try it out for me, i've only been able to test it on an ipad 1 and an iphone 3gs

I think it's a great idea and hope you do really well with this. Simple idea which looks well done

cheers! I don't expect to make lots of money, it's just been fun going through the process, to be honest a lot of what im going to be doing will just be for my own children's learning

Well i have had 35 downloads of my app in the last three days making me about £15 which is better than a kick in the teeth I suppose!!

Completed my next dolch word spelling app and submitted so hopefully will be approved in a few weeks

Well done on getting into the app store! Also thanks for posting info about using flash and the packager, might consider giving this a go as I have a fair amount of experience using flash.

James.

Congratulations, very impressive. I know nothing about programming so talk of action scripts and objective c flying over my head.

Well, my spinner app has been up for 7 days now and in 7 days I got 61 downloads giving me a nice weekly sum of £24.46 after my code giveaways

Not bad for a test app, I'll enjoy several beers this weekend on myself

I have a couple of updates I need to make though, the graphics look a bit shoddy on the iphone due to the scaling down of the png introducing artefacts, foreign language characters aren't support yet and i want to also add a shake to spin function

I'm amazed you've actually earnt anything to be fair. To take nothing away from your app it's pretty simple and nothing 'special'. It's no angry birds, let's be honest!

I'd love to do the same - bit of extra beer money would come in handy for sure!

No offense taken, I agree. This really was just a test to learn what needs to be done. I didn't expect to make any money either. I think at a price point of 59p though impulse buys can just be throw aways. I just updated the app to support european characters and also shake to spin mode.

I have two more apps now in review

One is a missing letter app which kids can use to learn the dolch nouns, every time they play, a different letter is missing from the 95 dolch noun words, they can hear the word and then choose the missing letter, it's random and the order is different everytime. The app then tracks the score and streak.

The second that I finished today is a counting app. It has 2 modes - the first is for counting to 10 for children who know what counting is but can't recognize the actual characters, instead of choosing a number they use their fingers to interact with the screen with multi touch. The second mode allows them to count the objects by tapping. This will also be good for students with special needs.

here is a video of it in action

both of these are again very simple ideas but they have educational value. I hope again just to make a little beer money as they both have only taken maybe 2 or 3 days work to make.

Now that is actually a superb idea - simple but very effective.

How does it cope with moving fingers? ie. three fingers being swept slightly

it works perfectly with that action, as long as the contact is still there it accepts it. i have another app in development against the same idea for solving equations where different areas of the screen are worth more so you have to touch different areas in order to solve the addition, subtraction, division and multiplication equations presented, it works really nice and is great for kineasthetic learners

Fantastic stuff mate! Can you give me a steer as to what tools are needed? Are you doing all of this just with flash pro or you using flash builder and catalyst too? How do you do the touch and gyro/motion sensor stuff!? Do you have links to tutorials that you can share?

I use Flash pro but you can use flash builder too i think

http://forums.adobe.com/community/labs/packagerforiphone

thats a good resource for finding out all the stuff you need. In flash you can't get access to all the api's but the gyro you can. I think there is a new update to the air adk which allows microphone and photo library access but you have to manually package the ipa file which is a bit of a stretch for my programming knowledge

my finger counting app as shown above is now live

if anyone has children learning to count to 10 let me know and i'll provide a code to get it for free, appreciate any comments and reviews

I think I have spotted a mistake, unles the yellow coloured person is supposed to be a woman in trousers? lol
At least making three possibilities to your one would have been the sane thing to do :):bonk:
