Hi, can anyone help me with some advice, I as an amature photographer have been asked to take some photographs of a young dance group. The children range in ages from 5 to 16. do I need to have a CRB check to do this work as an amature photographer. I have looked on the web but can't find info on members of the genral public only organisations. As anyone come across this before.

In theory no, however its possible the organisers may require you to have one before you do work with them, in which case they should be able to apply for one on your behalf

but you probably wont get one... unless your going to be coming into contact with the "at risk" then they wont even process your application.

Thanks for the info guys, I will get intouch with the organisers and see what they say. thanks again.

If they are umiing and erring about it, just explain to them that Ian Huntly had one and it never helped the poor mites he murdered. All an CRB says is that you may still be dodgy but you haven't been caught yet, they are a complete waste of time and money. I have had six done against me, every time I do a job fr the scouts, brownies or a school I have to have one done. Looks like I'm going to have to have another one done soon as I bailiff at the fishing club lake and we have a junior section, the fishing club is currently weighing up whjether to have us CRB'd or just dissolve the junior section.

well worth getting
i have had to have them just being in a church with young people in the congregation
a bit OOT
but clearance is clearance and imho worth it and very professional to be able to hand it over at the outset...

Don't forget, a CRB is not a piece of paper you can own like a driving licence, if they want you to have one to tick a box on their checklist, they will have to raise it - you can't!

yes if they have a team doing it they will have you fill up the forms etc
that is what happened to me in two schools and the church
others did the work
good point

Only required if you are in sole charge which you are unlikely to be; however most org's/people think CRB's are a magic pill to cover their @rse.
Part of my work involves me working alone in several areas in schools covered by two LEA's and as yet never been asked about CRB's.
Another part of my work involves going into newly refurbished or built schools, young offender, drug units etc that are to be "opened" by minor royalty, MP's etc to set up some equipment for them to use at the opening, never been security checked or questioned in any way either. Beats me?

If you do not get asked to go through a CRB check, perhaps you could get a little badge to put on whilst you are doing the photography, so that the parents can easily see that you hare there at the request of the organisers?
All a CRB should do is allow the organisers to be slightly less concerned that you may have had a bad past.

Looks like the answer is.... If the organisers are happy with me taking the pictures and the parents are happy with the photos I don't need a CRB. thank you all for your input.

Just make sure you are never left alone with the kids and you should be fine.

That is good advice even if you are CRB checked. If you are not the only responsible adult in the room, there is little chance for problems to arise.

My wife is a brownie leader. Their rules are something like there has to be two adults at all times, and less than 6 children per adult I think.

If you find it difficult to raise with the organisers, one route in might be to ask for them to get permission to photograph slips from the parents. My wife did this with their brownies when they went away for a weekend. No-one refused AFAIK, but she was prepared to ensure that if a kid was requested not to be photographed, they would not be. (photographs were done by the wife and made available to parents to purchase at jessops costs)

Good luck, hope it goes well!
