So does anyone here use Crashplan?

If so what are your thoughts about it?

Any pro's/con's?

Very interested to here peoples opinions on Crashplan

I tried it. Couldn't get decent speeds to their server (I have a 16Mbit up connection), so went elsewhere. I'm currently with BackupSolutions (http://www.backupsolutions.com/) as they have a UK based data centre and I can get all of my 16Mbit up link used. £63 for a year, unlimited storage.

Been using it for about 8 months now without any issues, once all the data is in the cloud changes / additions just sync in the background and if for any reason there's an issue it sends you an email as i found out when we were away on holiday and the PC was switched off , and i got a email warning that the servers could not contact my PC. Easy web interface lets you access / restore files from any browser enabled device. I've got approx 500GB of data stored with them.

I have a local 2 TB disk where an acronis image of my local data folder is incrementally backed up each night and i use crash plan as my offsite backup location.

I took up their family (10 computer) plan for £10 in Black Friday sale last year, can only get 1mb up if that, so it has taken forever to upload seeing I have 20mb/s Upload speed !

I am going elsewhere come November because although cheap, it takes too long to upload.

Who with? BackupSolutions don't have a family plan.... Or do you mean crashplan (I found I couldn't get decent up speeds either...).

Like quite a few others I bought a 12month plan with crashplan when it was silly cheap. Initially I had real problems with the upload speed but after a few quick chats with their support guys we figured out the problem and my ISP (VirginMedia) corrected the issue. It was something to do with the max data rate in the VM Superhub being set incorrectly - don't ask me I don't understand this techie stuff  I'm in VM's 30Mb/s service, BTW.

Anyway, it still took a while to upload just shy of 500GB of files but the weekly upload I've set-up appears pretty quick and as it gets done in the background I don't even notice it's happening.

I haven't tested the "restore" function ... and don't plan to :)

Always, always test the restore - if even to a blank old disk. There are many a story of people having a superb backup strategy only to find all the data is garbage.......

Spot on advice there Andy

I know of a couple of people who have had systems failures and when they came to restore from a backup found out the backups were corrupt and useless

Be using Crashplan at a couple of locations - all good, never had an issue with upload speeds.
Although I tend set and forget on that front :)
Restored files without issue
From memory there's a 30 day trial

The one thing that put me off crashplan was their single data centre. Amazon use multiple data centres and they are also very cheap - $0.01 / GB / month. My upload speed has been redlined during the upload. The one thing that may put people off is the need for a 3rd party client app - i am using ARQ.

Once my upload is completed, i shall to a test restore of a couple of folders and report back.

That would be quite expensive for me as they also charge transaction fees... (think I've got 750G backed up now and still not fully there....)

BTW, BackupSolutions won't back up files that are bigger than 20Gbytes (i.e. system images). Solution is multi-part rar files - which is what I'm working on now).

I also found out that the company uses the same backup technology internally as Backup Solutions, so that does instill some confidence in my solution.

Only data out attracts a transaction fee - data in is free. So you will only be charged in the event of needing to restore - cost for restore is $0.12 per gb for the first TB, so in the slim eventuality of total data loss it will cost about £60. I did check out backupsolutions on your recommendation but found very little detail about them, so went for amazon instead.

One other positive for amazon, you can send them a HD with your data, and also send them a blank HD for return of your data. Would be useful for speedy recovery of a large data loss.

Yup.. bit of a punt, but have had pretty good response from the couple of queries I have sent them. Not sure how much of a one man band it is though...
