Yes
I got home at lunchtime today to be greeted by puddles of vomit and a lot of blood. The dog wasn't well.

Fast forward 8 hours, and she is no longer with us. We took her to the vet tonight, who scanned her, and found a massive tumour on her liver, so bad that the liver itself was barely recognisable. They don't think she would have lasted the night. We hadn't seen any signs whatsoever, and she was her normal effervescent self when I took her out before work this morning.

Heart broken.

Really sorry to hear that Nick, I had to do the same for my dog a few years back, it rips your heart out :(

You know it was the right thing to do for her, that won't help a lot right now but it will later.

oh no l am so sorryto hear that Nick, sadly with this sort of growth you don't always see any signs and there is very little the vet can do.
{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}} to you and your family x

Sorry to hear that. My cat did the same. She was fine when I put her into the utility room at bedtime. 5am I heard her howling, she died just after I picked her up.

They break your heart when they go.

Sorry to hear that Nick, really crap news.

I'm so sorry - it's a huge part of your life that has been taken away.

Remember the good times you had with her , and be thankful that you did the right thing and ended her suffering - she is now at peace.

poor doggeh - but yes you did the right thing, its the final duty of any pet owner - loving them enough to let them go with dignity however much it hurts you

(talking of crap days , my mum went 'missing' this afternoon... after 4 hours of increasing panic we've discovered that she was admitted to hospital by her GP no word as yet on why ...I'm stuck 400 miles away , but my wife has gone to the hospital to find out more....I'm currently waiting for her to call , and browsing TP as a diversion from going out of my nut with worry)

Blimey, hope it all turns out ok, Pete.

Thanks again everyone.

So very sorry to hear this news Nick.
I hope there's a tiny bit of comfort that she obviously had a good little life with your family.

Sorry for your worry too
I remember when my old dad got on a train to London and was lost up there a Met all Police look out found him 5/hours later
That was in January
Move forward to now he cannot even speak sadly

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I can't begin to imagine the shock you must have had with it being such a sudden loss. My condolences and wishes of strength.

Sorry to hear this Nick that's truly awful :(

Still doesnt seem real to be honest. Might take the weekend to sink in.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Sorry to hear that Nick. I had to say goodbye to one of my Goldens just over a year ago. Even though I have another two it's still hard even now. Wish you all the best.

David

Been there more times than I want to remember and it has always been like that. The world stands still all of a sudden.

Dreadfull thing to happen. It will probably not help much at present, but it was a mercy in a way because that could so easily have been a condition whose progress caused a long slow deterioration. Try to think of the good times until you learn to live with it.

Best wishes.

That s awful Nick - I had a similar thing happen to one of my Golden Retrievers though not quite as quick - it breaks your heart. We sent him in for an exploratory Op as the Vet had felt a lump but had to let him go whilst he was on the operating table as the Vet said he would be in pain. It breaks your heart but its the last thing you can do for them. We rescued another soon after we lost him and it helps though you never forget them!

It's very hard mate.
My last GSD Elsa died in my arms on the floor of our hall from a massive stroke she waited for me after my wife called me in distress.
So I do feel your pain
Don't forget though your dog was cared to the last by you.

Thoughts are with you, Nick. I know we'll be absolutely devastated when our cat goes since (quite apart from being a much loved part of our own little family) she was Mum and Dad's before she came to us.

Pete, thoughts are also with you, hope the outcome is happier than Nick's.

I know how you are feeling ,I lost my best mate at Christmas broke my heart as he was never away from my side for 15 years .I found it hard to fill the big hole he left ,I found a site called borrow my doggy

I'm really sorry to hear that Nick :(
I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that she lived a full and happy life, right to the end, and the end was fast, when it came.

A very handsome hound; rest in peace.

Thanks again everyone for your comments. Its been a tough day.

I know we did what we could, and made the right choice for her. She had a great life with us, after being abandoned by her previous owners. RIP my little mate!

She's a cracking looking dog (bitch)

Sorry to hear about your crap news, you have my sympathy. Its amazing how attached we all become to our extended family friends. I remember the drive to the vets when I thought we was going to hear the bad news. I've must have stopped to be sick half a dozen times.

It's awful losing a pet but with so many being abandoned and uncared for I always console myself with the idea that when one goes another gets their place and a happy home for as long as they want it.

I lost one senior cat this year. Another the year before. It's crap :(

You have my deepest sympathy.
It's a very tough choice, but deep down although you are probably questioning it right now you know it was the right thing to do.
We had to put Willow our nearly 3 year old cocker to sleep earlier this year due to liver failure, I still miss her terribly.

Oh Nick, what a beauty!
Rescues make the BEST dogs...my GSD Chloe was a rescue at 7 months.
She was beaten for "displaying puppy tendencies", locked alone in a kitchen for upwards of 8 hours a day and scavenged food from the bin.
It was weeks before she'd look us in the eye.
She's been gone 18 months now but was hands down the best dog I ever owned.

Really sorry Nick.

I saw the thread title and was expecting to be able to join in with a moan about being stuck in traffic, post office queues and a generally all round less-than-brilliant day.
That puts it all in perspective.

Thinking of you and the family

Sorry for your loss Nick.

Always really hurts to lose a pet and a best friend at that doesn't it. You made a tough decision today but one that was born out of love and sympathy.

She's no doubt left you with lots of lovely memories and you gave her a good life. Always remember that.

PS Man Hug from me

Just came back to this thread and am blown away by the amount of comments. Thank you all so much for your kind words...and for the man-hug @Buck ;)

We lost our other Rottie (Tommy - also a rescue) 2 years ago, and that time seems to have just passed so quickly (manly due to the fact we were kept busy with a baby), but now Tess has gone as well, the house just seems so empty. It seems like weve gone from 2 dogs to nothing in the blink of an eye. All very surreal.

As a couple of people have mentioned, we know we made the right choices for them, and we know that they had much better lives with us than they had previously. They were both happy, healthy, extremely gentle and loyal. We take some comfort in that, and that they are no longer in pain or suffering in any way.

They will be extremely difficult to replace.
