Well its white alright but not the stuff you are thinking it is...

My nice white 2 year old plastered ceilings that I now can see the plasterer skimmed and did not put any bindings on the cracks in the existing Lath and plaster ceilings from 80 years ago (wonder how long they lasted before cracking?) are starting to crack.....I have repaired these cracks and they come back, albeit slowly, so I am looking at getting this flexible paint. Never used it and have no experience of it has anyone on here give it a go, if so what was the verdict please as its not cheap for 5lt of it and if its a no go then dont want to throw my money away on it...

If you have any other solutions that have worked? Preferably I can do myself......? I have thought of Artex But shudder at the thought to be honest.....

I should be locked up for the amount of ceilings I've artexed in my youth, a crime against interior decorating
 
I dont want this to be an Artex confessional thread, its a suggestion thread for my Crack-ed ceilings :)
 
I've used the crack covering stuff on an old ceiling and walls (lath and plaster) but the house is long since sold so I'm afraid I can't really judge its longevity. Since the cracks reappeared overnight using either Tetrion or Painters' Mate and the paint lasted at least a few months, it did last a while. Chances are that the plaster is dying and needs replacing, I'm afraid.
 
Oops! Reread the OP. Skimming a dying L&P ceiling was a waste of money, I'm afraid. The only real cure is stripping the old, dead plaster off the laths and replacing it, although finding a plasterer who can redo lath plastering could be difficult and not cheap. You could rip all the laths out as well and stick plasterboard up instead but that does lose a lot of the character of the old building. If it's only 80 years old though, it shouldn't be a major loss and should last a good while.
 
Plain wallpaper? (like they used to do in the old days)
 
I've used Caulk before. I use a gun over the the cracks and then use a damp cloth to smooth. The water in the cloth seem to help slow the drying process so no shrinkage cracks. And Caulk is flexible filler after all
 
Double boarding.
Just put up new plaster board over the entire ceiling, screwed to joists, tape and fill the joints and screw holes.
Plaster board is pretty cheap, around £6 a sheet (2.4m x 1.2m). Filler is £2 and tape is £3. I use Diall filler powder.

The problem with caulking the gaps is that the caulk usually just pulls away from the sides of the crack once it's dry and the ceiling flexes. It often works fine for good, sound plaster but from the sound of it, the OP's just has a skim over failing old L&P work.

Agreed, the ONLY solution to cracking l & p ceilings.
 
Double boarding is a bodge! IF you go down that sort of route, pull the plaster down and bag it up then strip the laths out (make great kindling!), denail the joists and then board and plaster. If a job's worth doing, do it properly!

It's not a bodge.
You're talking about an awful lot of work to remedy a crack.
Fair enough if you are doing a complete renovation, but that is overkill.
 
This is a rental property, I purchased from a builder who has done a great job on the refurb, However the plasterer has cut a few corners with a few older cracks.....Removing the whole lot is OTT as they seem in decent condition otherwise......I am looking at a couple of repair methods.

Agree, just overboard the existing L&P. We had ours skimmed as well.
 
Skimming including taping cracks, as you will know, would cost about £150 to £250 for a normal room up to about 5m x 5m

We had it overboarded and skimmed for £350, room is probably 5m x 4m. Just pva`d it and painted it then. Bathroom ceiling by the way. Seemed a reasonable price to me....:shrug:

The £150 to £250 price is for skimming only. Over boarding would cost about £150ish. So the price is reasonable.
