I'm just beginning the process of learning image editing and I have downloaded the trial copy of Lightroom. I also have Elements 6 installed.

When I select in Lightroom to import CR2 files from disk I can only see the Elements icon for each file not a preview of the image itself. JPEGs I can preview.

If I randomly select a file then it opens up as in image in Lightroom. Is there any way I can preview and select a CR2 image?

if you import them in lightroom you can see a preview of the CR2's but it's the step after you have selected the files. So if you say import all photos in this folder then lightroom will give you an import settings box where you can apply keywords, develop settings etc, if you click show preview in the bottom right they will appear, then you can select which you want to import or not by just ticking the tick box.

Hope that explains, I just import everything and deal with the keepers and rejects in Lightroom but everyone has different workflows

Thanks for the reply. When reading it I realised that Lightroom is a workflow tool and not just for editing individual files. Am I correct in this?

The next problem is that the "import all photos in selected folder" in the dialogue box bit is greyed out.

I had the same problem when I updated from a 450D to a 50D. messed about installing updates and stuff but I finally decided that life is too short to mess about with downloads and installing/re-installing programs forever. All I did to solve the problem was set my camera to take RAW plus low quality JPEG. in lightroom, (I use adobe bridge) the preview shows the CR2 icon and next to it the JPEG. I can look through the JPEGS to find the photo I want and then open the relevant RAW file.

When you are in the import dialogue you are looking at a normal windows explorer type view so you will need to have the Canon codec installed to see thumbnail views of CR2 files.

Once you have done the import the library view in Lightroom will show you the pictures in the folder using its own preview thumbnails.

Lightroom is a complete raw processing and image management program. Edit the picture then keyword it etc and have an organised system where you can find things easily. Takes a fair bit of learning but worth it.

I downloaded the canon RAW codec and now I can preview the CR2 files as images. However, the "select all photos" bit is still greyed out. More research needed!

Thanks for all the replies.
