Just started to play around and shoot in RAW, just looking at some of my photos on PC and right clicking and checking properties the file types are CR2 File (.CR2) any idea why they are called that? Or is that the term for RAW?

As has been said above, it's Canon's RAW file format. You'll need software to open it up, process it and then save as a TIFF or jpeg.

Ah cool, so nikon and the other brands have there own file type for a RAW file?

Yup ive got photoshop. Where is the best place to stick up a few beginner images?

I quick question on CS4, any idea how I can browse through all off my images? Like you can with jpegs using windows photo viewer?

Edit, looks like you use filemstrip-but can you make the photos bigger, and view with a smaller thumbnail and larger photo besides it?

You can use Windows Photo Viewer for CR2 files.
Just have to download the Codec for it from the adobe/windows site, i can't remember which.

I dont know if u understand that or not  but it's like a patch to get Windows Photo Viewer to view RAW's

I think someone might get a link for you :P
I can't remember the link :p

Ah cool, yer I understand you. Thanks. Yer if someone could post the link for it please? Iam on win7 if that makes any difference.

You can use filmstrip and make the thumbnail smaller, but would perfer to use window viewer.

Use Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop I believe) to browse your thumbnails and you can make the preview pretty large. Brprovides a lot of info about your files too.

lightroom can also be used once you have imported the images to Lr.

I seem to recall that when the 10D came out, RAW files had the extension .CRW so I guess that .CR2 corresponds to the second generation of this particular file type.

Yer using bridge now, you cant view the image very big ***. Thanks anyway. The windows plugin would be handy.

You can drag the windows around to make them different sizes within Bridge. So you can make the preview image really big and just have a thin strip of thumbnails down the left hand side of the screen.

You can make the preview almost any size you like! My view is 2.3 of my 22" monitor!

In fact you can make it bigger -

Ive been out and taken a number of monochrome shots, and iam trying to view them now but they are all in colour, any idea why?

Monochrome is b&w isnt it? :s

When you shoot RAW, it is only a picture style that is applied in camera...once it is on your PC the RAW file is back to colour...you have to convert it again in Photoshop (or your tool of choice)

Ok, kinda understand. How would I change the colour to b&w in CS4?

There are a number of ways to convert to B&W. To be honest you are better NOT using the camera's own B&W options anyway but always shooting in RAW. If you do shoot in RAW and convert to B&W in software you have several different options for HOW to convert. You can get a better finish using alternative methods dependent on the image.

Select IMAGE>ADJUSTMENT>BLACK AND WHITE and click [AUTO] or make adjustments and click [OK]

Just have a mess with the sliders having made sure that "Preview" is selected.

Oh and if you install the TP script below you can batch process B&W conversions.

Anyway got the link for the add-on for Windows Photo Gallery?

Thanks, so its best to not select monochrome on your camera and just change the images to b&w in PS?

Dont follow your last bit 'Oh and if you install the TP script below you can batch process B&W conversions.'

Yes and it also means that if you take a picture and find that the picture would work in colour better then you can just keep it that way!

In my signature there is a link to the Talk Photography/Cowasaki Script Writer thread - this script is worth a look, one option is black and white conversion with several different options.

Ok thanks, cant see your sig :s

Sigs only appear once on each page so it is associated with an earlier post further up the thread :)

Cheers, ive not got a mac ***

Ah right, Iam not sure what a 'Script Writer' is, could you explain it in brief?

I was just mentioning it, basically it is a script (an add-on) for Elements or Photoshop that adds extra features specially for photographers. When you get a moment just have a look at the thread and see if it is for you. Only mentioned it because it allows batch processing of a script and you can set up a script to convert the image to black and white, resize it and stick a border on all in one go.

One thing I've found about B&W is that by using the in camera black and white option my pictures always seem to look better than if I shot colour and did a conversion in Photoshop. Has anyone else ever felt that before?
