Hi folks,

My desktop PC died sometime in the early hours of Sunday morning :(

The baseplate for the CPU cooler broke and the inevitable happened .... RIP processor :(

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement baseplate for an AVC cooler to fit an AM2 socket? I really don't want to have to buy a new cooler too cos it took me ages to find one that fits in a very overcrowded case but handles the heat from my overclocked CPU.

TIA for any suggestions :)

Further to the above, I'm thinking it might be time to pension of the mobo in my machine a get a newer one. I don't do any gaming but there are plenty of gaming mobos to be had at quite reasonable prices. Would mobo designed for gaming be any good for photo editing?

I doubt the type of motherboard will make much difference to the software you are running generally since it is essentially the thing you bolt everything to that actually speeds things up (cpu, ram, gpu etc). Asus and gigabyte are both excellent, my personal preference being gigabyte as they seem less fussy than asus over RAM brands once you get into higher end memory. Go for something with usb 3 (most newer boards have it now as standard) and sata iii 6gb ports so you get the full speed out of newer hard disks and ssd's. Scan.co.uk are normally very good and competative price wise, ebuyer aren't as good as they used to be since they expanded their market from being a computer shop to a jack of all trades. Also have a look at aria as they do some very good deals too.

Gaming motherboards tend to have better power regulation so would be good if you're going to overclock again but there's little need to with modern CPUs. They often have more ports which is why I've got one in my second PC - there weren't many Z97 mITX boards with five SATA ports but Gigabyte made one.

Looks like I've managed to source a new cpu and backplate for the existing cooler so the new mobo idea is on hold ... might get resurrected at the weekend if these new parts don't sort the problem :)
