Hum, it seems my 50D and 40D are not acceptable as bodies for membership. You must own a minimum of two current Canon professional camera bodies and the 40D doesn't count - despite still being sold/listed as a current camera body, and available for selection on the CPS website.

I was considering buying a 5D or 1DS. Does anyone know if these are eligible or if it's just the 1DS/1D Mk3 and 5D Mk2?

Unless things have changed, the 5D and 1D2 qualified....along with 3 L's.

I guess I have three qualifying bodies (5D and two 1D2N) and at least five L lenses but they were all purchased second hand or off eBay so none will count as eligible. :(
 
Why?

I am a CPS member and apart from the 1D Mk 3 I recently purchased from new all my L lenses were purchased s/h with the exception of 70 - 200 F2.8. (I have 5)

When I joined 5 years ago a 10D & 20D were accepted along with 3 L lenses

I've got a 5D (MKI) which was purchased from new
A 1D MKII purchased 2nd hand

3 L lenses - All purchased new

I qualify, so I don't see why others with 2nd hand kit don't
 
That was the same for me to, joined about five years ago and had a 10 & 20d with the 3 L lenses, now have 5d, 1dmk111 & 1dmk2n along with even more lenses:thumbs:

I have enough qualifying lenses (and accessories) but it seems you can't use a 40D and a 50D body to qualify, even though they are current bodies.

I'm trying to seek clarification before I bring forward my backup 5D/1DS plans

AH see - current and previous body. I doubt that would be accepted now.
 
When I applied to CPS, my gear didn't meet their criteria. At the time, I only had one camera body and one lens. I fired off a polite but very firm email to them saying that their definition of what a professional photographer should have in their bag was ridiculous. I told them that I only needed one camera and lens for my field of work, and if the MPA accepted me as a member, so should they. A day or so later I got an email back from them stating I would be accepted.
 
I've only got a 1d MkIII and a 40D.

I got in without hassle just a few months ago with:
- 1DsIII
- 5D
- and 5 x L's

I got in at the end of last year with a 5D and 30D plus 4L lenses.

Don't know why your that worried about it really, apart from a Diary and a couple of magazines there does not seem to be much other benefit. If the experience of others is anything to go by it is does not even help that much when you have a problem.
 
I got in a month or 2 ago with a 30D and 40D body along with 5 L lenses, so not sure why they're knocking you back. Maybe you just don't look like a photographer :suspect:

i didnt even get my diary this year, and the nice EOS magazine has been replaced by a (IMHO) boring CPN "arty" magazine
 
To become a CPS Photo member the current stipulation is that you should own at least two professional Canon AF SLR camera bodies and three Canon L-series lenses purchased at an authorised Canon dealer in Europe.

Doesn't look like secondhand private sales would enable you to qualify :shrug:

That's how I read it initially, but further on, you realise those are only guidelines. I submitted an application without mentioning the source of any of my kit and think I've been accepted. I suppose I'll only know when a membership card arrives in the post.

That's not the case, every lens I have (bar one) was secondhand and declared as such.....they still let me in. I suspect that anyone applying without meeting the criteria is the subject of an assessment.

Well, I've had to get two of our cameras fixed this year. A guarenteed turnaround time would be nice.

Funny as I told them my stuff was bought from Jessops, which the bodies and two lenses were.

I thought I qualified with a 40D, 50D, 100-400L, 24-105L and 70-200L F4, at least I did according to the website but not to my local rep. On top of that I have a whole host of other accessories I registered, total cost to replace new is something like £5000, so not a small investment.

Oh well.
 
I have read a few recent threads on FM that suggest that the criteria has changed, and they are not too happy about it, here is a LINK to one of the threads. If you use the search function you will find a few more on the subject.

So it looks like Canon are exercising their judgement with their own guidelines. If that enables more photographers to access the support, then that has to be a good thing.;)

That seems to be about the requirements for the people across the Atlantic, the requirements for CPS membership in the US and Europe have always been a little bit different.

Just as a follow up, today I received email confirmation of membership so they are only suggested requirements.
 
I've received confirmation. Any 5D and 1D models are considered professional camera bodies, the 50D is acceptable but 40D and below are not.

You must own a minimum of two current Canon professional camera bodies (EOS30D/40D do not qualify).

i think these memberships are stupid. i bet there is someone utter idiot with a 5d who can take a picture to save his life, and then theres someone with a modest 40d who is a brilliant photographer. there context of "professional camera" is bull****.

On the website you select the main category (body, lens, accessories etc) then pick the model from the drop down list and enter the serial number.
 
I think based on your portfolio they also look if you have non professional kit to see your ability.
 
I remember about 3 years ago one of the lads at the DPreview forums posted with pride that one of his photos was being used in one of Canon's promotional magazines. I'm not sure if if was the CPS newsletter or one of their catalogues - I think he was a member of CPS (and that the photo was submitted through that). The photo was taken on a 300D!
 
LOL - wasn't asked about photo's. I'd have been happy to have provided proof.
I had a good year last year.

I came runner up in a photo competition and travelled to Manchester for the presentation.

My picture was used to advertise the event/exhibition, being displayed on a huge display near Manchester train station.

I came 5th in POTY on this forum, and had several of my car shots published in magazines.



But I think at the end of the day they are wanting to restrict the service to professionals, not enthusiasts like myself. Just wish it made that clear on their website/application form.
