Hi all, first stupid question.

I have a Cpl filter, been using it a while and i noticed that it has notches in front and it rotates free of it fixing to the lens. So how should the filter be orientated?

Thanks!

they are most effective at 90 deg to the sun, turn the filter until you get the desired effect e.g cut reflections in water, bluer skies.

Aaa, thought that maybe the case.

I went out the other day with it and had a play, never thought of rotating it, thanks for the advice.

Sorry for typo's too.

If you are shooting towards the sun it will give minimal affect, as said you need the sun sat on you're right or left shoulder.
They don't work very well on a wide angle lens as parts of the sky become darker than others.

Yes, perfectly correct and because of that it is worth bearing in mind an undesirable effect of using a polariser with extreme wide angle lenses. The colour saturation produced will not be constant across the whole image.
