I went on an EOS day at this place earlier in the year which I found helped me get a better understanding of my camera. It isn't particularly indepth but covered enough so I could move out of the auto settings and into TV, AP and M.

I have also registered on an evening photography course with my local Adult Continuing Education centre. The course covers:
The modes – introduction to the course and how to adjust the camera
Cameras – history about them, the basics, aperatures, shutter speeds, film speeds and technical stuff.
Places – how to photograph your home environment
Faces – How to photograph yourself, each other
Lighting – Window light, flash on camera, external flash, refelectors and household lighting
Things – Table top and still life set ups (they set up examples in the centre for practice)
Photography after dark – what to do when the lights go out
Mounting and presentation – you take existing work and they will demonstrate how to crop, matte and mount it to produce exhibition pictures, joiners and mosaics
Some of the things may be a little basic for me but I think that overall it will be very beneficial. The course runs one evening a week for 6 weeks and at £48 I thought it was pretty reasonable. I start on 3rd November and am really looking forward to it.
Maybe you could see if there is something like that near you?
I have heard mixed reports about the OU course you have mentioned. Some people have said that it is very porly organised wheras others have said they found it helpful – there was quite a long thread about it on the PhotoAnswers forum.
