Could you please recommend me a DSLR camera for motorsport

do i get a prize? :)

my suggestion would be to get a used 10d (or possibly 20d if you can) for about £150 - £200
and then a used 75-300mm canon zoom for about £80

take it from there, and upgrade you stuff as you go

My mum wants too buy new. Seen as it is her money I got to do what she says.

i agree with what badger baiter has said, second hand market will get you much much more for your money, i still shoot with a 20D which has been near faultless for the past nearly 4 years now i think! you;d probably be able to pick one up for less than £200 used which is a hell of a bargain considering it is a more than capable camera. leaving you more money to buy a nice long lens, you can pick up a 70-200f4L for around £300 second hand and whilst it is a teeney bit short for some corners at oulton for the money it great!!!!

The main reason why my mum wants to buy new is the fact she is worried it will go wrong and i will have no garuntee. Plus she knows me and knows what im like. I am VERY clumsy.

Its is settled on 400D now.

50mm is pretty good for that. Although I'd say spend a bit more and get Sigma 28-70mm f2.8. I've got a Nikon version of it, and it is superb.

What about a refurb 20/30D?

Lens wise I'd say with a limited budget the 50 is a given! Then a fairly decent 70ish to 300ish, I can only comment on the Canon USM one, which isn't too bad!

Mums often work on logic that is only understandable by other mums. Sometimes its not worth arguing... Manufactuers warranty will help with some things, but some things due to cackhandedness wouldn't be covered by a warranty anyway.

not just mums, but all women

If you are saving and its going to take you a while, then aim for a 40D. The 50D is out in the first quarter of 2009, the price of the 40D will fall through the floor then

desantnik do you have any information on that 50D a weblink maybe?
i'd like to have a read up about it.
much appreciated.

Martin.

Have a look at the used sections on these websites, all will give you 3-6 months warranty on used items, it will also give you some ideas as to price. On eBay I can recommend canon outlet (canon uk1) who do reconditions/return canon item with 1 year warranties and they usually have a large selection of SLR bodies. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet

When it come down to what to choose, used or new, whether its Nikon or Canon, a 350D, 1D Mkii, D80 or D50 etc, it doesn't matter what body you buy (these tend to get replaced).

The lens is one of the important factors (%$*£ lens on front of camera, %$*£ images, but you don't have to spend stupid money to get a good lens).

Another important factor is really down to how you use it, a good technique and understanding of the camera + lens, its limitations and how to get the best out of it is more important than spending $$$$$.

If this is you first SLR a canon 350D or nikon D50 will get you started and won't break the bank balance, and they are very good camera's (forget about fps, spray and pray really only works on the professional ranges and you really don't want to get into this lazy habit, so a 350D would be fine).

As for a lens, (this is where the bigger chunk of $$$ unfortunately hits you) but a would seriously recommend something like the sigma 100-300mm f4 (£600-700), this is a great lens, very usuable zoom range, fast, sharp and will do most of the things you want. Also think about maybe a battery grip, which balances out the camera and lens. Hope this helps

Peter
