Could this be the prettiest digi camera for film users ever?

I would love to get someone to convert one of my Nikons it would be ace

colour me temped. Ive an xe-2 at the moment but with firmware updates drying up i might trade up. I thought the body would be more expensive than that so will keep an eye on the refurb store.

I would have to also say at the price it seems very reasonable, add on a 35mm lens and that would do for me.
I have been looking for a year or two at these Fujis and soon maybe I might be tempted back to digital.

for me its the looks and the size .

Still like my XE-2,so even if i get one will still keep it :)

I still can't get on with EVFs
^^^WHS^^^ I've tried them and they just don't work for me. I'm sure they'll improve over the years but for me they're unusable.

Ped, I was of the same opinion until I tried the X-T1's EVF. If the X-T10's is anything close to that, have a try. Fuji's ;lenses are great too.

yeah the xe-2 is a cracker and its what killed off shooting 35mm for me. But im just jelous of the updates the x-t1 is getting now so want something that will be looked after. There is no rush at all, im sure you'll get a refurb well under £400 once they start appearing on there.

The last time I went and checked one out about a year ago it was there flagship model either the 1 or pro I think. I liked the finder but it was a bit poor in low light it was like the more light the electronics disappeared. I do think in a year or two these might suddenly just be good enough and I will get one, for me film is fun and I imagine in a bundle of years I will move away from it like we do with all hobbies.

Got the XT-1 as well, the XE-2 make a nice carry anytime kit with the 18-55mm :)

Also in the unlikely event I was actually going to go for a retro looking digi camera I think I'd rather go for the Df or the Olympus OM-D

I looked at the Nikon Df thing but its huge and so over engineered and spensive.

I have a pair which I really like. As being discussed in another thread at the moment, for pro use, the AF could have been better (it's the same as the D600) but everything else is fine for me. :)

except its £2k which kinda isn't allright :-)

How much are the film backs?

The evf on the xt1 is exceptionally good. I honestly thought it would annoy me but it doesnt, it is very good indeed.

Mark this day folks, a (positive) discussion in F&C about a digital camera!

I've had the X-T1 for 6 weeks now and I absolutely love the EVF.

H'mm if the idea catches on thieves would be nicking film cameras thinking they are digis......as it is now who would want to nick a Zenit film camera.

only because its pretty, most digital cameras are heavy and fugly :-)

I used to hate electronic viewfinders, but a couple of years ago, I tried one out in a Fujifilm camera. Can't remember which one but it was a hybrid (could be optical or electronic) and I thought it was very good.

I assume they have improved a bit since then.

The standard moving mirror, ground glass and a pentaprism as found in 35mm SLRs is a bit of a compromise to get a good through the lens viewing system to work. Once the image quality of EVFs gets good enough, there won't be any reason to use a moving mirror.

For some people, the quality is there already. Others might have to wait a bit longer.

Steve.

I think I'll hang on for a bit.

To be fair there are quite a few nice looking digital cameras around, now that the fashion is all retro. A mate of mine has an X100 and it's a lovely looking piece of kit, it can't be denied. But there's a fakery about it which turns me off completely. It's similar in a way to the phenomenon of using digital cameras and Photoshop to create images that look like they were taken on film. If something's worth doing, do it properly, don't fake it. Lovely old cameras look lovely and old - that's got to be better than something that's pretending to be something it isn't. What's more, the pleasure in using an old camera (putting aside the end result) isn't just in the way it looks, it's in the way it handles, the sound of the mechanical shutter, the manual aperture adjustment, the clockwork self-timer, and so on.

How long before they fit a fake winder mechanism to activate the next digital capture...lol

It would be nice if they could produce pretty cameras for both formats, but I'm thinking that digis are much easier and cheaper to make than mech film cameras, which sounds bizarre but is probably true, plastic and pcb's vs cogs and springs..:)

I think Fuji has really taken this to heart; what makes these cameras interesting to me is the affordance of those shutter speed and exposure compensation dials, and apertures on the lenses. Simple things like having an A setting on both to allow aperture or shutter priority or full auto (if you want it). Works so much better than all those weird menus 5 deep and fiddly control wheels. Specially if you're a film camera user!

I used to be in the same boat, and promised myself I would never ever buy a camera with an EVF - but the EVFs in the last few years have been using extremely high resolution, high quality displays, with virtually no noticeable lag. Sure, they aren't pentaprisms, but it's a continuously developing field and I wouldn't write it off immediately.

Fuji definitely have this spot on, and I think their popularity speaks for itself. With my Nikon FE2, what do I do normally? Change the aperture on the lens barrel, set the shutter speed dial to A for aperture priority, and use exposure compensation on the top plate if necessary. What do I do with my X-E1? Change the aperture on the lens barrel, set the shutter speed dial to A... you get the idea.

I haven't written them off completely, I'm sure one day they'll be fantastic but just as I waited for them to sort out shutter lag on an affordable DSLR before I bought one I'll wait for them to produce an affordable and acceptable EVF before I consider buying another one.

Steve.

Sounds like an X-Pro1. It's got a proper OVF but with a quick flick of a switch (where the self timer lever often is on film bodies) it transmogrifies into an EVF. Not as good as the X-T1's EVF but handy for checking the true framing and composition. Handles very like an old rangefinder but with AF (if wanted). (I'm talking more Kiev than Leica but it still feels good in the hand!)

of course it is after all a digital camera. my thoughts were from a film users perspective this one is the prettiest :-)

I'm confused..

don't film users want pretty film cameras that are new, I mean....its a nice thing but from a film users perspective, its completely useless.....isn't it ??

Film for fun, digital for work! I was tempted by this one as an upgrade/alternative to my Canon DSLR, but I might just go the whole hog and get an X-T1. I like dials, loads of dials, more dials please!
