Could my old ADSL Router be bottle necking my connection?

Hi Guys,

I live in a fairly built up area and I am apparently 1.5miles away from my exchange.

I am on a 20mbs line from EE (I pay £15 for line rental and BB). My connection hits around 3.5mbs most of the time. Once in a while I have seen it go up to 4mbs now n then.

We have an old Philips router which I feel may be bottle necking my connection but before I go out and buy a new one I want to know if this is the problem and if anyone has any experience with it?

How do I even go about changing my router, what info do I need from my ISP?

Any recommendations on a new ADSL Router?

Thanks

Jon

What is the sync rate on the router config page? It should give you an up and down speed connection. Let me know. Is the adsl modem adsl or adsl2?

Neil,

Yes chances are its an "Up To" The OH set it up. No speed estimate as far as I can tell

Dale:
Not to sure, I will check it out see If I can find it, any ideas what It should be? (at work a the moment sadly). How do I check for ADSL or ADSL2?

Some additional notes.

The Modem is plugged into the main phone socket with a BT Iplate. There is no excessive cable and the speeds quoted are based on wireless connection right next the router.

I do not have a telephone plugged in as we don't use the land-line at all and there is a new micro-filter attached to the line

in that case you may not even be able to get more than 3.5mbps, an "up to" connection you can get (and pay for irrespective of speed) anywhere between 0 and 20mpbs. maybe go on to the BT and/or Sky websites and run their line speed estimates for new customers. that should give you a rough idea on what you should be able to get.

id put money on a new router not helping much if at all.

EE are bloody useless, i have had no end of problems with them recently. I used to have a solid 6mb connection this then started dropping for no reason, so after xmas i had had enough and called them nearly 2 hours on the phone and lots of discussions i was ready to tell them to stick it. 2 days later they called back and said that it was our end to which again i argued they did one last test and then all of a sudden we are now getting 11-12mb and over a mb upload to, But they are adamant they have done nothing. Well call me stupid but i cant see how they have done nothing yet i have now got a connection twice as fast.
get on the phone to them and have a chat and moan, i ended up getting 2 months free from them and have said if it doesn't stay stable i will be leaving at the end of those two months as im not paying for a service which they cant provide.

I have a degree in internet technologies and networking so know my way round a router and some of the things they asked you to do was silly even blaming the devices and wireless regardless of a connection speed less than 56k dial up. i hope they sort this a lot quicker and easier than my problem

Hi, my down stream is 4000kbs and up is 807 kbs. Adsl2

Id try plugging it into your master socket directly first. It'll rule out any wiring or microfilter problems. Check the speed and if it's better you know its not EE or your router. The master socket is hidden behind the faceplate of your main phone socket, you'll need to undo 2 screws on the faceplate...

Try the suggestion above also if try a wired connection and see what you get

Hi,

Master Socket is an improvement, Consistently hitting 4mbs rather than 3.5.

Worth me ringing EE for the magic line test?

How old is the 'old' router?
You will be on ADSL2 if it's supposed to be able to max out at 20 near the exchange.
Some old routers won't be able to make the best of it.

If you tell them yours is dead they might send another.
I would buy another one from ebay if they won't.
You can get worthwhile features on a 'better' one such as a USB port to attach a drive all using it can share.

Good to have a back up anyway, mine has been killed by lightning down the phone line twice.

id call, but be prepared for a load of stupid questions

BT is quoting between 4 and 8 on normal BB line here

The router is about 7 or 8 years old

your speed might be about right then. you could ask them to reset the line into its training mode where it checks the maximum stable speed for your connection. it normally gradually increases the speed over several days (do not reset your router in this period) until it becomes unstable and then they throttle it back a touch.
