I'd forgotten all about this ...

When we moved in to our house 15 years ago I replaced the original kitchen and found this bodge, forgot all about it until I took the cabinet off today to do some fiddling.

They had drilled holes through the cable when installing the cabinets then knocked a hole in the plaster & taped up the damaged wires, I don't even want to know why there are three cables in a ring main ...


Not too bad for a house built in 1990 :D
 
Is that the 30 amp supply cable? They were lucky someone didn't get killed.
 
A fine piece of workmanship by Dodgepot Kamikaze Ltd. by the look of it.
 
wow that is pretty shonky I'm guessing that is up high for the top cabinets to hang on.

I remember speaking to someone who discovered the builders who'd refitted their kitchen had wired the concealed lights and extra sockets by hammering twin-and-earth into the plaster in a zig-zag pattern; light > socket > light > socket > light, then papering over it.

I'm certain the "sparky" who originally wired the house was either on day release or drugs, our bedroom is wired as a spur to the kitchen and two of the fuses in the consumer box are wired in parallel !
 
Could be a ring main which would be 2 of the cables, and a separate 3 core cable to a switch?
Obviously any damaged cables should be repaired or replaced properly.

I got bored today & pulled a new cable through :)

That's what I did when I punched a screw through my cooker cable, it was live when I hit it, fortunately I wasn't holding the screw at the time.

Ah that reminds me of the time I needed to extend a cable from the freezer to the plug socket.
I wired a plug on to a length of cable, plugged it in, ( to a live) socket, measured out the length I needed, and cut off the surplus with a pair of pliers.

It was quite a pretty flash as I remember :D
 
I've got a couple of pairs of side cutters/snips with notches blown in the blades. Nice tools other than the damage! The sparky sometimes works "live" and trusts the insulation on the handles when things go pop.

Done that and 30amp night storage heater wire with a pair of scissors whilst still live, pulled the wrong fuse out of the main box, good job the handles were insulated. Don't work on leccy anymore.

Apropos of nothing in particular, my father did something remarkably similar and kept the pair of side cutters involved for years which bore two neat holes in the blades :)
 
Many years ago my (ex) husband put a new plug on something and couldn't work out why every time he tried it, the electric tripped out.

After about 8 attempts (and him having undone the plug several times) I asked if I could have a look ..... :rolleyes:

Rewired the plug having cut the end of the cable off and it worked.

I still have the (perfectly cut to length) end of cable with the live and neutral the wrong way round ...... :D
 
I read that mains lead colours were chosen so that even completely colour blind people can't mix 'em up, but so many folks still manage it. :facepalm:
 
He was so adamant that he had done it right ...... :rolleyes:

I used to wave it at him if he p****d me off just to wind him up ...... very entertaining!
