Cotswold Cameras

Comical or perhaps just factual Llamaman? My real name is what you see. If you do a google search you might find the odd reference squirreled away somewhere, however not much else as I haven't really done that much thus far for Google to get overly excited about. I am a software developer and have utterly no connection to any company mentioned in my post. I haven't even said as to whether I would purchase again from the one I did this time. I have merely stated the facts of the process I went through to buy the equipment I did. I haven't said to purchase from any vendor I have mentioned, in fact I have been quite clear that people should make their own minds up based on their own research.

Normally I wouldn't bother putting the effort into writing such a long posting on a forum like this, however I feel the need to simply add a little balance to the blind cynicism of persons on this thread for the benefit of others, like me, who found it as a result of Google putting it at the top of what is no doubt a search that many people will do. I haven't done this for the benefit of the cynics as I'm not actually bothered what they think, as my post isn't meant for them. Surely even the most hardened though can by now start to see a pattern in the 'first time' posters on this thread coming here from doing a Google search on the aforementioned company name;its not rocket science.

The degree of cynicism shown in this thread would suggest to me that either those persons involved are directly associated to high street vendors and feeling threatened, or that they are resentful of others who have gone elsewhere. Either that or they are just utterly ignorant of globalisation within the market place. If not, why then feel the need to be so derogatory? What's wrong with just providing polite factually based advice to those asking for it, and letting people make their own judgements and wish them on their merry way?

Will I stick around on this forum? Answer is I'm not sure, I will see. For me photography is for fun, so if I start participating on this forum in other ways and I encounter equal cynicism then I will quietly step aside and avoid it as I have better things in my life to do than be bothered with such petty things. If not, and I see constructive critique of anything I might post, then perhaps I will hang around a while. That said, I might just enjoy what I do, not go looking for approval from others, and go play with my son instead! Either way if what I have posted benefits any others then I'm happy. Especially if doing so winds up the cynical old farts amongst you!

If we are cynical it is because there is a recurring theme of first-time posters registering here just to sing the praises of a single retailer before vanishing into the ether. At least one account has been exposed as a shill using a stolen identity.

It is also rank hypocrisy to decry our cynicism by adding your own declaring us to be shills for the high street stores. Most of the contributors to this thread are established members of the forum and we know what each other does for a living, and it isn't writing fake reviews on the net.

I would recommend hanging around the forum - there's a lot of useful and constructive advice here, dotted with the odd internet silliness that you get everywhere. I suspect, however, that you will do like all those before, and not contribute to a single thread other than this one. I would be delighted to be proven wrong.

While we're at it, the above statement seems a fairly stock reply & used many times as defence/deflection by other foreign suppliers.
Surely it wouldn't be something the average person would tend to use?

Quite. I have over 2,500 posts on the forum - hardly the behaviour of a high-street shill. Besides, most of us who are long-time contributors have at some point talked about our jobs/careers.
It looks like a cut-and-paste job without considering who the rant was at.

"While we're at it, the above statement seems a fairly stock reply & used many times as defence/deflection by other foreign suppliers.

Well no, actually it doesn't. Did you not read the rest of that paragraph? What it does say is that, from an outsider's perspective reading this thread, the utter degree of cynicism you are showing towards all people like myself can only lead one to surmise that that must be the case. Sure, you might get some, but not everyone is going to be some despot far eastern company's stooge, so don't go treating everyone in the same manner please! I'm not surprised that Anthony, who actually came across to me as quite genuine, hasn't bothered returning if this is the kind of welcome he gets for, again, just providing his opinion on something. Did I go buy anything from the company he mentioned as a result of his posting? No, I went to the people heartily recommended by OldCarlos! Could it be that OldCarlos is in fact a covert stooge for the 'P' company?!...

Besides, again, what's the problem you have with people buying from outside the UK? If more people did then perhaps the exorbitant markups seen in the high street would disappear and we could all go back there again to buy things! Not only does one of our companies buy materials from around the world, but we also sell globally too. Does that mean that someone in South Korea should immediately see our company in the same light as you see these? Fortunately the vast majority don't. Like I say though, I might find that the thing goes wrong and the company I did purchase it from are rubbish at supporting me. If that happens I will add to this post with the facts so others are then aware of it too.

I'd also actually like to think that I'm not just an 'average' person OldCarlos! To compare my command of the English language to that of some far eastern suppliers is also a little bit lame I'm afraid, I deal with and get many such correspondences thrown my way on a daily basis and they do not put their words quite as succinctly as I have! I haven't even put a single 'do the needful' or 'thanks a bunch' in either!

Besides, again, what's the problem you have with people buying from outside the UK?
The issue is not the location of the seller, but that some sellers are apparently/allegedly using underhand tactics such as creating fake forum accounts to shill review their own firm. It's not only dishonest, it's illegal in the UK.
Should we not call them out on that? Personally I wouldn't touch such a company with a bargepole - why should I trust them with my money if they're THAT dishonest?

The prices on Panamoz.com are all inclusive. All import and customs charges will be covered by us fully, and will be billed to our shipping account directly. You will not be billed. These charges include import taxes and duties, such as VAT, and all associated charges, such as administration fees."

However they resolve this it is Panamoz's responsibility and legal obligation to meet your country's import regulations.

My item went straight through customs without any queries being made, so I am taking it that this is indeed the case.

.

Oddly when i emailed panamoz last year and asked if this guarantee still applied if i voluntarily declared the correct value of the order to HMRC when i received it , I never got a reply - strange that

Surely an oversight - email them again. :D

. Does that mean that someone in South Korea should immediately see our company in the same light as you see these? !

Does your company pay all the correct duty and tax etc when your goods are imported to south korea ? (if the answer to that is no I 'd urge you not to say so publically)

thing is often (and speaking generally here not about a specific grey importer) , the grey price + uk duty and vat is actually higher than the legit uk dealer price. Ergo the grey importer can't be paying the duty honestly if they are making any money.

As i understand it there are four basic grey import models

a) to ship the goods misdeclared as 'low value toy parts' or similar in order to evade correct duty - this used to be common but has become rarer as HMRC crack down on it

b) to ship the goods without a value marked and pay only if they get stopped

c) to ship the goods without a value marked and shrug their shoulders if stopped because the buyer is the importer

d) to only import goods that are actually still cheaper even when the correct duty is paid (perhaps through a bulk buy price over seas) and declare them correctly importing them yourself to a uk base , then sell them to customers from there.

IMO I have no problem buying from a dealer doing (d) , but a-c are smuggling dressed up as a legit business and i'll have no truck with them

You both make fair points and as far as I am concerned the business I have dealt with say they are wholly responsible for declaring and paying the VAT for the item (digital cameras being duty free anyway I believe, http://www.dutycalculator.com/count...taxes-when-importing-into-the-United-Kingdom/ ). So if they have not declared things properly through their processing of the item then it is for the relevant authorities to take them up on it. If that is the case then rightly so too.

In most cases grey importers state clearly (in the small print) that they are simply arranging sourcing the product, and that it is you - the purchaser - who is the importer and thus responsible for ensuring declaration. They might indemnify you against any extra costs, but that is only a contractual civil matter between you and them and offers you no protection from UK law if an item is misdeclared.

I've ordered a canon eos 7d mkii from Cotswold Cameras yesterday afternoon. I'll let you know how they perform. I've bought grey import before, a Panasonic HX200 camcorder from Expedite Electronics. Took a lot of badgering via email to get a delivery date, but I got there after about two weeks. Cotswold Cameras have a phone number which just tells you to leave a message and someone will email you back. I've emailed them about paying for faster postage - no reply as yet. I've paid by credit card so I've got some protection if all goes horribly wrong.....

you might think that - but actually as cotswold are having their credit card payments processed via paypal account actually you don't

By the way ive just noticed that their main contact is a gmail address - that doesn't fill me with confidence either

Also festival house, cheltenham is a formal office ltd virtual office location - formal office ltd list as one of their key benefits "you can work from any location in the world yet appear to be based in one of our prime business locations in Cheltenham, Didcot or Gloucester." colour me unsurprised

Hmmm. I get the feeling it's not exactly a company with offices. More like a man in a shed with a PC. Still, I'll wait and see. I've used some small (one man) suppliers in my job but I've always had contact via a phone. That's what really bothers me, there's nobody at the end of the line but an answer machine.

thats because the answer machine is part of the virtual office service - and they just forward the messages to the real location

oddly the whois data for the website gives an address on the isle of harris which is shared by David Fleet landscape photography. - looking on the bright side if he's the actual operator of cotswold at least theres a uk citizen to pursue if anything goes belly up (usually the owners of grey importers turn out to be in shanghai or similar)

you could always give him a bell on 01859 502820 and ask ;)

I'm probably jumping the gun, but just called PayPal. I can file a dispute if I have to as my card is registered with them. Hope it won't come to that...

They had an address in Cirencester which was a private house and their office. David Fleet is a member on here, sometimes comes on to answer questions about this as it's a web presence only company.

Their website is definitely giving the Cheltenham address only currently - may be david has recently moved to Harris hence the virtual office address

Order status still shows 'pending' , no response to emails yet. I'll post here whatever happens...

Order changed yesterday to "Processing" and had an email from the company - I'd asked if there were any options to expedite delivery (answer was no). At least I got an answer! Still "Processing" this morning...

Strewth. You don't give them much time do you? Ordered one day and looks to start a dispute the next. Would you prefer delivery the day before you order?
Strange that the day you joined here is the same day as you complain about them?
Do I smell a troll?

There's also a registered business address in Newark for Cotswold Cameras Ltd (registered address changed last month), which is a new company not mentioned on the website.

If you read his website he moved *from* Harris a couple of years ago.

No I'm not a troll. No axe to grind. They may yet deliver - I joined because I liked the look of the forum, initially I was looking for advice on astrophotography.
As you will see from my initial post, I thought I'd report how they performed. I knew I was taking a chance with a grey importer having dealt with one already. I'm not looking at raising a dispute, but I wanted to check where I stood with paypal after a reply had said I probably didn't have any protection. What I'm not too happy with at the moment is the lack of any contact. Either via email or phone.
As I said, watch this space...

Apologies, camera turned up within the time specified by the company. Manual in English, correct power adaptor etc. even the camera menu was set in English.
I waS able to track it from Hong Kong.
Would I use the company again?
Undecided. I sent two emails, and each one took around three days to get a reply.
But then again, it is the holiday season. If things go wrong, then I think it will be a fair test..
Watch this space...again

One day to slag the company off. 12 days to say there was nothing wrong. Hmmmm?

The problem with this thread is that until someone who is a long term member here buys from them and reports back, there will always be a great deal of suspicion over this and other similar companies.
They may well be above board but until it's proven - there's the issue.

True. And I'm a not a long term member. Hope to be, though.as I said, everything went ok apart from the communication. Unless I have cause to contact them again, I.e. a problem, I won't be in a position to judge the whole buying process.

I didn't slag off the company. Just expressed reservations. Read my previous posts.

Like, here...

Understand you might think I've got ulterior motive for posting ( moderator warned me it was a hot topic) but really, I haven't. Believe me or not, your choice.

Well to be honest, you have hung around longer than all the other people who have posted in this thread singing their praises. Another thing to note is the fact you have a user profile pic - most spammers don't seem to bother with going that far;)
Most people in here will still have their reservations and it really would be a good thing for all the doubt to be dismissed.

Yes, I understand now. The only forums I've been a member of have been aviation ones. Didn't realise grey imports were such a hot topic, and unaware of the 'join a forum just to leave a glowing review of a company' issue.

Yup, it's pretty annoying as it undermines the spirit of the forum, where we want to be able to take people as their word. Unfortunately, it does make people a bit hostile to newcomers who put their first post in the "suppliers" section. I hope you're not too traumatised by the experience!

at the end of the day if you got what you ordered at the price you ordered it at and it arrived within a reasonable time period, why start to "moaning" and being critical until you have something to complain about

all we get on here is a lot of "wind" from people who suddenly become nervous about "their money" within two or three days of ordering goods ………. before the goods are received and it turns out to be unjustified and unwarranted

Has anyone got a real complaint, has not received what they ordered or been subject to fraud? ……. if you haven't don't post and slag suppliers off until you have something to say as you are just wasting everyones time

Most know what they are "buying" and the risks that they are taking and what some of these Ebay and discounted sellers are up to, one day one of them will go "pop" - you made the choice and you are not an "innocent bystander"
