Cost effective to repair?

Afternoon,

This morning, I had my Sigma 70-200 F2.8 mounted on my tripod by its collar whilst I changed the battery in my camera. Some person (who I like to refer to as 'the idiot') came along with his dogs and he was letting them jump around all over the place and generally misbehave with no correction from him.

One of the dogs crashed into my tripod making it fall forward directly onto the front element of my lens. It hit concrete, smashing the front element. Now, as well as that, the AF motor seems to be malfunctioning and I can only assume that the other elements inside the lens are out of alignment also.

This lens was purchased new 2 1/2 years ago and is not the OS version. In insurance terms, would this be a right off, or would you think the repair would be cost effective. I will be sending the lens to Sigma in the next few days for an actual estimate to give to my insurance company, but just wanted to get some opinions from you guys and girls.

Cheers

Nick

I take it the guy in question hasn't offered to pay for the damage then. If he's supposed to be in charge of the dogs he's walking then he should be liable for any damage the dogs cause. If your insurance company gives you any hassles you want to look into going through small claims court to get a replacement.
If you'd been swinging your camera around and it went through his front window would he expect you to just walk off and ignore the responsibility.
Some people really do make me angry with their 'less than responsible' attitude towards other peoples belongings.

Does the dog owner not have insurance for his dogs?

I very much doubt the guy had any kind of insurance. When it happened, the guy still didn't try to do anything to control the dogs, and pretty much just shrugged his shoulders at me and carried on walking away. I had too much kit to shift/put away to give any kind of chase, and I have no clue where he lives unfortunately.

Looks like I'm in the hands of Sigma for the time being...

You probably could get it repaired, although you wont have any kind of warranty for it etc. Personally I think the insurance company will right it off and replace it.

From experience a few years ago I would say your insurance company are likely to write it off.
I had a similar thing happen with a 400mm knocked over by someone, my household accidental cover, covered it, no questions, no hassle and they insisted as I had new for old that I go for the latest model

I'm trying to remember but I'm pretty sure sigma guarantee any work for I think 6 months?

Plus you'll still have the original warranty (providing it was registered and took advantage of sigmas 3 year).

Thanks guys, I'll update with what happens.

You MIGHT get lucky, sigma repaired the drop damage by previous owner of my 120-300 (whole focus mech and cams were ovalised needing parts from hk) for the standard service tarrif.

Quick update.

I took the lens into the guys at Sigma today, and as it turns out, it is beyond economical repair. I paid £675 for it 2 and a half years ago, and the parts and labour costs to repair it would be £927.

I'm now I'm the hands of my insurers :0)

Fingers crossed it will be ok, I'm covered for single items up to 5k including accidental damage. Will update again when they get back to me ;0)

Well, the insurers are going to settle. Honoured my claim in full...minus excess and vat ( as I'm registered) of course ;0)

glad it worked out Ok :)
I,ve had problems with dogs jumping at me while I,m trying to take a picture as well
