Hi everyone I'm just wondering if anyone has experience at cosplay conventions. I'm working my first one at the end of the month and I'm trying to decide on prices for packages. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

I've no experience of cosplay conventions, but why wouldn't you do this analysis before agreeing or paying (for a stand or a booth) to work at one? I'd google some of the other photographers who will be there and see what their packages are.

I get the impression that a lot of photographers do it for free... because it's cool photographing cosplayers and it's often quid pro qou in terms of time for images - So you'll be competing with that..

Experience of a cosplay convention - yes - great fun - experience of people paying for anything at a cosplay convention - zero.

I attended the biggest convention in Malaysia about 2 years ago - and a good friend of mine set up a full studio directly in the centre with a variety of cosplay backgrounds - everyone was invited to come and use the backgrounds for free - not a penny (or a ringgit in malaysia's case was charged) - but the studio name was everywhere, and at the studio they had more cosplay backgrounds - and that's where he made his money - people booking for a few hours shooting after the event. They hired his studio though rather than hiring him as the photographer.

There were so many amateur photographers at the event - and with so many people photographing each other - I'm not sure in that location's case charging would have worked.

When you say you are 'working' what do you have in mind?

In my experience, cosplayers are pretty creative people. Meaning they are usually artists, writers and yes, you guessed it. Photographers.

Most will have a friend 8n the scene who is more than competant to take photos for them for free. I can't imagine many will want to pay for it.

Yes agree with the above there I’ve been to a few there were plenty of people taking Photos
The cosplayers were pretty clued up and passed cards with their details onto photographers
I was happy to give them photos for free to be honest

The normal rules here are you're not allowed to charge for photos. Photographers use it as a marketing opportunity and hand out cards promoting studio shoots. The only photographers being paid that I know of are working for the event.
