Bought a Cosina CSM from fleabay and it's in really good condition. Put new batteries in to see if the metering works. It does. BUT, for some reason, the mirror stay up and the self-timer light comes on at the front. I have to ease the battery cover off a turn before the mirror returns. What silly thing am I missing here?

These have a mirror lock when the self-timer is used so could be a fault with that.

Does the mirror drop if you wind the film advance lever?
Self timer is faulty, so there's a connection fault probably.
As soon as I loosen the battery cover, the shutter fires.
I'll just manage without the exposure meter I suppose. Thanks for the help.

Have you tried letting the timer run and see if it trips the shutter?

How was the condition described on eBay? If it doesn't work properly and the condition wasn't "For parts or not working" then you are entitled to a full refund, including shipping costs.

Se a list of the eBay condition descriptions covering cameras here.
I thought there was a recent change where the buyer had to pay extra for buyer protection. Although, when I bought another Rondinax, I didn't notice such an option...

Stated on ebay: "Working when last used but recently untested." Last used could have meant years ago. AND there was a film still inside. It was an Agfa Vista 200 24 exp. That's from quite a few years ago I reckon. I seem to be getting quite a few cameras with film still inside them, loft finds or dead relatives I expect. I'm happy with the price I paid and the rest of the camera has certainly been well looked after.

It makes no difference how it is described in the auction. If it isn't listed under the For parts or not working category and it doesn't work properly you can get a refund if you're not happy.

The shutters are electronically timed. Although the shutter and mirror appear to mechanically do their thing, I think that you will find that both curtains cross the gate without opening if tripped without batteries fitted.

Thanks for the info. I've put a film in and will check this.

SORTED! I didn't read the instructions properly, I'm terrible for that. You need to press the shutter button all the way to fire it correctly. Press halfway down and you're checking the metering system and then need to press the aperture release button. Once you have got the green dot lighted on, check the composition of your picture and press the Shutter Release Button all way down giving a slow, steady pressure on it to take photograph. Advance the film for your next shot.
DOH!

Well found. I really enjoy using my Cosina CSM/R/L. I hope that you get great use from yours.
Just worked through the various shutter speeds. They ALL appear to be firing at the same speed, whatever that is. ARGH! If I knew what it was ...

You have to open the back and see the light coming through the iris of the lens (best wide open) e.g. 1 sec a nice bright circle but 1/1000 sec just a quick flicker of a circle

Shutter curtain failing to open again. Loose connection probably.

so with the back open you see nothing i.e. circle of light.......at any speed setting? also AAMOI it can show if curtains etc are working properly e.g. only a partial circle.

The only time it opens is on the M setting which is supposedly 1/50th sec.

Ah! so that mechanical speed works, so it's electro mechanical is the problem and as you say a dry joint or whatever for other speeds.. :(
