Hi to all me and the family are off to the show on Sunday for the first time. For those that have been before any tips etc.. will be appreciated , I'm hoping to have my first serious go at Air Show photography !!
Thanks in advance
:thumbs::thumbs:

ps
what of my gear should i take ???

for the air show i'd be tempted to use the 40d with the 100-400 as you'll get the benefit of the cropped sensor and also IS in mode 2.

For inside the museum I'd use the 5d with the 17-40 as things are very close together in there, especially in the cold war display...so a wide angle is a must :D

Have fun with it.

Traffic will be quite bad. Early start recommended or get a train from New Street right to the Airbase. Can't wait myself.

I passed by there this aftie, they already have signs up warning of traffic delays for it, this will be my first trip though so I cant really say.

... chocolate teapot anyone! ;)

Sounds advice from Digitalfailure. I can't offer any advice about Cosford as I don't attend but for general airshow advice.....

Make sure you add some exposure compensation or use a meeting mode such as centre weighted to stop the plane being underexposed against the brighter sky. Shooting AI Servo with only the centre point AF should help you keep a good focus lock. Watch out for the 'show of force' pass by the Tornados in the RAF Role Demo, it's very fast and usually good for some vapour but you will need to be on top of your game to catch them!

Hope the Vulcan is fit for its 1st show

Sorry Neil, it won't be. It's not got it's permit to fly yet. After it gets that it will then require one or more of the pilots to get there display permit. I'd expect something like 1-2 months before they are likely to get those.

I saw the volcan at manston a few years back,
it blow a hole in the runway on take off, which was great for us
as it had to stay up until they filled the hole in.
Super machine.

Hi guys

fingers crossed for the weather . i will be there with family + brother / sister - law and kids .

one tip , for gods sake take some food and drink , went to my first air show last year while in Ireland . it would have been cheaper to ask the hotel to make a packed lunch .

sausage and chips was £6 small tray .
a lad in front of us nearly drooped to the floor when he was asked for £36 for him and his m8`s
we got one for our little lad and we some crisps . i hate getting ripped off

gear i took 100 - 400 + 24 - 105 . cameras i will have two 5d`s . p.filter i`ll also maybe take a mono pod . cosford museum is very good and worth a visit , but maybe on a quite day . and it`s free all year .

another show to look out for later this year and FREE is

hope all who go this weekend have a great time and get some great shots

Hope the weather is better than last year. well actually, the weather wasn't too bad, it was warm and dry, IIRC. But there was mist/haze in the sky until around 4pm :(

When you're at Cosford with all the other spotters don't forget to take a moment and remember all the poor buggers being forced to man the displays, giving up their weekends to talk about things they have no real interest in with absolutely no thanks.

I had to work Cosford airshow twice and that was enough thanks muchly, an absolute nightmare. I'd make the most of too, if the socialist scumbags get their way and move No1 School of Technical Training to south Wales there won't be any RAF people to put the airshow on.

How bad does the traffic get, is the train a more sensible option?

Me as well!

The last I heard they were having problems getting the nav kit calibrated. If they can overcome that soon then they should make RIAT / Waddo. If they miss those two it could really hurt it's chances of finding a major sponsor.

Sorry for going off topic!

Crosses fingers for Waddo, tickets arrived at the beginning of the week.:)

It can get VERY bad. Can't remember the motorway I usually use, but you start queuing up on there. Probably up to an hours queuing, maybe? No idea how good the train is.

M54

Not by choice mate, living with the in-laws whilst transitioning from the RAF to civvy street. If all goes to plan I will soon be an Ashby-de-la-zouchian ;)

Hi all, I've lived by Cosford for years and yes on the day the traffic can be horrendous. What you could do (which I do) is park your car in Albrighton and walk...only takes about 20-30 minutes but beats sitting in the car for that length of time. If anybody thinks of doing this you can park on the Crown carpark in the centre of Albrighton....and it's free. Try and avoid the M54, it'll be chocker in both directions
Regards the Vulcan, bit of inside info which to be honest doesn't mean that much really, but the Airshow programme which has just been printed but not for sale until on the day has a good double page spread on the aircraft and the efforts that have gone into it's restoration....it's in the programme as flying at 16.30 for an 8 minute display, but don't hold your breathe!
Someone mentioned about the position of the sun, well it appears on the left of the flightline and as the majority of aircraft fly in from the left it could prove tricky...but looking at the forecast for Sunday don't think it's the sun we should be worrying about!
Personally I won't be actually entering the base as such as the best vantage point is on the elevated train station platform which by chance is the closest proximity to the runway. You get a good overall view from there, plus you can shelter if it starts to rain.

Cheers
Tim

Trains from Brum (New Street)

09:36, 10:28, 11:32, 12.27.

45 minutes journey time with returns just as regular.

Apologies don't know my left from my right! The sun will be at the righthand side of the flightline and the aircraft fly in from that direction most of the time. Just as a footnote the reason this years airshow is this weekend is because it's the only date the Red Arrows could make before doing the Canadian/USA circuit. It was in the local paper about 2 weeks ago that they will land this year which I can't remember them ever doing so that should give some descent photo opportunities.

Tim

Interestingly on the Vulcan to the Sky Trust website under general news from yesterday it states that.... "Note at this time there is no commitment that the aircraft will appear"
In my book that's niether a yes or a no so being optimistic who's to say that it won't be there...maybe under the guise of another test flight, but restricted to a flypast rather than a display.....told you I was being optimistic!

Tim

the vulcans only going if it passes the air test which it is probably doing today or tommorow have a look at the webcams on tvoc

is there a timetable of events anywhere

I haven't seen a timetable but I think I read that from 11 -12 there will be model airplane displays with the main event being from 12 - 17.30.

If anyone knows any different I would love to know as well.

just trying to see what time i can leave it to get there . don`t really want to get there at doors open . as we will be in party of two fam`s with 3 kids 2 under 4 .
our little lad has been to one air show last year . he loved the red arrows . and spitfire .

anyone that has been to cosford before what time is best to avoide traffic . and is it easy to get a good spec

Hi Rog, well getting into Cosford is a bit of a nightmare at the best of times...getting outs another matter! If possible avoid getting off the motorway at Jnc 3. If travelling from Shrewsbury/Telford direction get off at Jnc 4 and follow the A464 through Shifnal and turn left signposted Albrighton, make your way through the village and when you come to a crossroads turn left this leads you to the A41 and the entrance to the base is about 1/4 mile if that.
If coming from Wolverhampton direction get off the M54 at Jnc 2 and follow signs for Telford A41, this route however can be just as busy unless you look up a route and cut through Codsall & Codsall Wood, there's plenty of other short cuts via the lanes.

Tim

i hope the vulcan is there its gotta pass the tests , plus theres two typhoons

the best time to get there is just after the gates open as you wont be sitting in too much traffic

Thanks for the info on the 2 Typhoons mickv, can only imagine apart from the solo display the other one appears in the Role Demo?
Yes would be great if the Vulcan turns up and to be honest I reckon it will! Having seen the VTST forum snippets there's certainly an aire of expectation! Funny that the hanger which houses the bomber is closed on Sunday to the public, regardless of the excuses there's something to be read into it...and somethings going on!.....watch that space on Sunday!!
With my feet back on the ground this does promise to be one of the best Cosford shows in years...I remember the couple of A10 tankbusters displaying many years ago in a thunderstorm! Now to use an americanism that was "Awesome"!
