Yes
After a morning of shooting outdoors, I turned the camera off and popped indoors for about 15 mins. When I get back outside I turn the camera on and try to take more pics, only to find "err 02" Please replace CF card. or similar.

Nothing I could do would work so I packed up and came home.

Now, the pics show up on my Epson printer when I insert the card, but I cannot download the images.

I'm aware a format may fix the card, but can anyone suggest a way of downloading the images.. ?

what brand is it? Sandisk CF cards come with a rescue software, haven't used it myself but it may be able to help?

Yes, sorry, should have mentioned that ...

Its a Sandisk Extreme III

Didnt get any software with it though :(

As I've never had to use it I don't know whether it will help you. Hopefully someone who has can respond and let you know.

I have a few copies somewhere, if you don't get any joy I can let you have one (provided I can find them ) for a small donation to TP?

PM sent. I've offered to do the recovery for you, and would return the card with a sealed copy of the SanDisk software (which I've not tried, as I use Magic Photo Recovery). No charge apart from return postage (plus a TP donation if you wish).

I have a copy of the SanDisk recovery software - if you PM me you address I will happily post this later FOC...

in my experience, the free sandisk software is pretty limited...
There are some 3rd party freeware and shareware apps that will tend to the job with a greater degree of success...

CD sent as promised...hope you get the pics sorted!!!

Was it an e-bay SanDisk? Every Extreme III CF card I've bought has come with the RescuePro software disk in the packaging so it's possible yours is a dodgy copy card.

I was an ebay purchase, yes.

Just came in the plastic case.

I wouldn't know if it was a copy or not tbh, but if it is, it certainly looks very good.

It has the "Sandisk Extreme" and "ESP technology" in the holographic type, and certainly doesn't have the "feel" of a cheap copy.

The ebay seller is now "No longer registered", how do you think I stand with getting it replaced ?

You would be surprised how similar the ebay fakes can look, a bit late now but for future reference never ever buy memory cards from ebay, it's to much of a minefield, try play.com or mymemory or picstop.

2 chances, I reckon - fat and slim.

Some of the copies are supposed to be VERY good.

Have a look at this ebay guide to see how to spot a fake. You might get your money back from ebay/paypal but I wouldn't bet on it.

I have a recovery disc. If you want to slip over you are quite welcome to it. plus i could loan you a card to keep you going.

Generous offer Gerods, but I have a recovery disk off another kind member.

I have the Ultra card that came with the camera which should do me for now.

Still might pop over one evening though, been meaning to for a while !! if your up 4 it that is...

Looking at that guide, It seems I DO have a genuine card.

I've received a recovery disk off another kind member and managed to get the files off the card.

My next problem is that now I cant format the card. I tried first using windows and it came up with error 99. So I tried in camera and that hasn't worked either.

Never rains but it f****** pours dont it !!!!!

The trouble is the fraudsters are getting better and better at cloning cards. People are getting vigilent but the fakes are getting better.

All the extreme III's I've bought have come with a card storage pouch and the rescue CD.

It may be possible that Sandisk supply as a bulk stock without packaging.

Did you pay ball park price or was it curiously cheap?

I've been caught out once and now I buy from reputable sources.

^^ I cant remember exactly, but I think I paid about £14.

2gb extreme III

it might be worth trying a piece of free software called reccuva.

It managed to pull files off my dead hard drive that I had deleted some time last year!

Anyone any ideas how I might format a card that wont format with either windows, or in camera ?

Keeps showing error msgs each time I try :(

Probably not want you want to hear, but I'm not sure its worth the risk of attempting to reuse, even if you manage to get it formatted, you could end up loosing more images later, or damaging the camera if it fails drastically, I seem to remember a thread in here recently about a cf card killing an onboard fuse.

I've got to agree with that. Imagine shooting for a day and then loosing all your pictures because of a faulty card, not worth the risk IMO.

If you really do want to recover the card to a working state, and manage to do so (probably a lot easier to not use windows). Once partitioned and formatted, I would recommend running a thorough disk benchmark program such as iozone, which checks that what goes on=what comes off, before using it for any real data.

Hmm, ok.

Looks like I'd better admit defeat then and bin it ....

I'm left wondering what caused it in the first place. All I did was turn my camera off for 10 or 15 minutes, then back on again.....

Meh..........

Cheers chaps !

How old is it?
I think that sandisks are guaranteed for about 5 years
I had a similar problem contacted them and after a bit of faffing ( to check that it was genuine) I got a replacement
look for the contact details on their web site

http://www.sandisk.co.uk/

edit Oh and they emailed me a format programme that they use in an attempt to rescue the card first but in my case that failed

^^ Its about 6 months old, but I bought it off an ebay seller who is no longer registered with ebay.

It was brand new and everthing and the sale was perfectly legit, only I have no receipt or anything.

*goes off to check emails from 6 months ago....*

I didn't have the receipt either
they will ask you a few questions inc the number on the side, then where you bought it from.
IIRC I said "play" but it may have been another source as I couldn't remember
again IIRC you get a returns "order" send back the card they check it to make sure
that its genuine and send you a replacement
as I said previously its a bit of faffing around and took a couple of weeks
but once they assured themselves it was genuine that was that
It has to be worth a try

You could try Swiss Knife to format the card LINK Evidently only up to XP though, not Vista.

But I have to agree with everyone else, and ask would you ever trust that card again?

Better to contact Sandisk, and if it is genuine then I'm sure they'll replace it with a new one.
