Let see how this goes...

There's lots of post about wedding shots but for me (and i guess many other pros) i have my fair share of business event photography, from black tie celebrations to corporate group shots and conferences.

I was having a chat with a fellow tog about how much (creatively) you can actually get from an event, some times its a small board room, bad light and cramped space or a low light conference with small guest speakers and a tall lecturn, is it just about documenting the event for people or is it more?

I look for the 'different in events', the angles, the alternate shots but do often struggle to really get the creative juices flowing.

What do people think? Maybe people could post up any shots they consider (or their clients considered) a 'cracking shot'!!!

The thing is sometimes what the client wants is pretty boring. i tend to play around with the branding a little but always back that up with basic simple documentation of the event.
Here are a few shots from the last month, all pretty boring, nothing special about any of them but all being used by clients in some shape or form. Most of the events had many images in the set i would have said are much better than these but that is often the way.

I've not done many of these but so far I have stuck with the 'recording the event' (or before the event in one case), I think there's a little scope for creativity with the details sometimes

I think it really depends on the client but most want a record.
Anyone else going to share?

sorry been a bit busy...here's a few of mine. I agree about the details and about the documenting. When I shoot i always try to looks for the shots that might be used by the cleint in advertising...sometimes you're given a great location with lots of context, most times not.

I like them Andy, lots of context, bet the client used many of them.

Good job Dan, Even at the low res. As you said its all about context and putting yourself in the mind of the client.

cheers Andy...another thing i'm always concious of (maybe just me) is moving about and getting into different positions especially whilst people are talking during a conference etc... maybe i should grow a set and just crack on, its the shot thats important for me.

I just get on with it. SO long as i am not making loads of noise or talking all that matters is getting my shots.

No its full of photographers and we dont need any more

I'm heading down that way this summer, permanently, I hope it's not too full :D

I would hope it's about more than 'just' documenting the event. You have to put as much creativity into it as anything else, otherwise why would they hire you next time over anybody else?

Usually you have to get the standard, press friendly shots of speakers, etc. but in my experience, most companies want something a lot more interesting to go along with it - be it for their website or extra shots in reports, etc. It's all about branding after all, and there aren't many brands that don't want to appear modern and interesting.

Some I don't think realise how interestingly something can be photographed if they're used to having 'red carpet' style photos in the past. ie point the camera at that bit, take a photo, then do the same over there.. they're usually pleasantly surprised if you show them what a bit of creativity can do. You're never going to get the most amazing photos, but I don't think you'd be doing yourself or your client justice if you didn't try to.
