Hello everyone,

On Thursday, I am going to Cornwall for a week with my family and am looking for ideas, such as certain places of interest down there.
My main photographic interests are Wildlife and Landscapes, so i'll be taking my 14-45mm and 135-400mm as well as some ND grads.
The last time I was in Cornwall was when I was about 5 so I can't remember it all that well :p

I would like to try some seascapes as well as general landscapes.
Also, if I manage to, I would like to have a go at shooting wildlife (in the photography sense ;)).

I will be going to Longleat on the way down, so that will take care of some of the wildlife stuff.

Any ideas will be appreciated :)

Go to Newquay any night of the week and you will find plenty of wildlife!

Seriously which part of the county are you coming too?

Hi,
I have just checked and my father says we are going to Bude (or close to).
I think he wants to go around north Cornwall.

Plenty of scenic opportunities down the coast
Tintagel Castle
Padstow, views accross the River Camel to Rock
Bedruthan Steps
Watergate Bay
Going inland, try out on Bodmin Moor, plenty of walks from Minions, north of Liskeard, where convenient parking is available.

Thanks for those, I will see if I can fit them in

Crossing into Devon there's the beaches and coastline around Hartland Point, about 15/20 miles from Bude.

I've spent a lot of time in Cornwall, especially around Newquay, never been to Bude till a couple of weeks ago, err.....it has a great beach, a bit of a windey river....and thats about it, quite disappointing really, oh, theres something on the hills to the North, big dishes/radar station or something (not Goonhilly), we flipped a coin between it and Boscastle, Boscastle won and made the trip worthwhile.
Seriously though, any trip on the coast road between Bude and Lands End will slap you silly with banging scenic sea scapes, clapped out old farm houses and abandoned slate/copper mines.
On the way to Boscastle, took a detour and ended up at Widemouth bay, when you see it you'll know why its named so, un-fortunately the road past it narrows to 6ft and bends like the knot in you're shoelace with steep hills, it goes like that a lot down the coast.
I shot a pano of widemouth on digital, but I can't be bothered doing anything with digital these days, its still in the camera which is still in the bag on the floor where it landed 2 weeks ago.

oh, good luck with the journey, it's horrific during peak season daytime, I generally set off about 2am and end up jet lagged :bang:

Thanks for the information everyone, it will come in handy

I go to North Cornwall a lot for landscape photography, and i've always been sure to bring a magazine guide I got a couple of years back with me. Luckily I have the pages still scanned in, here you go - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9Q7CM9MW

Be sure to check out Golitha Falls for some lovely nature photography, Bedruthan Steps has a lovely beach and views, but very steep steps, Bodmin Moor/Roughtor is probably my favourite place in Cornwall, I make sure I go every time. You can get some great photography up there. Lower Tamar Lake (which is around Bude from what I remember) is a nice scenic location, although when I went a couple of years ago it was difficult to walk around as it was getting overgrown. Trebarwith Strand is near where we stay (Boscastle/Tintagel), and is great for photographic crashing waves on rocks, although we never see much of a beach when we go.

I've heard great things about St. Michaels Mount, but it's far down from North Cornwall.

Good luck!

Thanks very much for that John, it will be very useful

Bumping a very old topic :D Just wondered how you got on. I'm heading to North Cornwall in a couple of months :)

There's lots of old derelict tin mines which are photographic gold especially during sunrise and sunset. The Tamar valley has lots of interesting places. Bodmin moor is worth a walk or two.

I agree with all of these and you might want to include Clovelly as well

bit late to add but I live in bude and can recommend the drive to tintagel and boscastle down the coast road (head out through widemouth bay and where the road continues back inland there's a turn off thats straight ahead) on the way there's crackington haven and loads of pretty places.

Bude beach is good for surfers if you wanted to have a go at sport shooting (or surfing) theres also birds and stuff.

If you wanted to take a day try driving to dartmoor, it's been a while and I dont know what you drive but if you drive up through okehampton theres a road to the camp that if you follow will take you up onto the moor and a nice greenlane (non damaging - took my sis's freelander up it last time) The road itself is car safe and theres places to park at the top, never been in summer though so might be a bit busy.

The dishes are a gchq listening post btw

and I second hartland as pretty though i have never been there without lots of wind and rain and cloud :D

PM me if you want a guide :D I'm back from uni for easter and have a fair bit of non revision freetime

oh and boardmasters isn't necessarily the best place to learn to surf, a load of my mates went last year and it was a surfing and skating ****up/competition with bands, though theres plenty of places to learn in bude, i need to one of these days

Hi,

wow didn't expect this thread to come up again

I had a nice time, although the weather was bad.

We stayed near Bude and went to most of the places already listed in this thread. Clovelly is a must, really great (on a sunny day!!)
