Copyright: Selling my first photo

The owner of the building below would like to purchase the copyright to my image:

The building itself has never had a photo like this taken of it, they have all been normal snap shots and nothing overly exciting which is surprising with the history of it.

So my question is how much should I expect to let it go for or price it at?

I know its down to what the owner is willing to pay for it, but I have no idea how much to ballpark a figure at.

Any help would be much appreciated :thumbs:

I would say don't sell them copyright, that means you can never display or claim ownership of the shot again.

Determine what they want to use the image for and then sell them usage rights for those areas. You retain copyright but they can still use the photograph
 
Is he after a print or the digital image?
How long did it take you to do, and how much an hour do YOU think your times worth, take that as a starting point then depending on whether he's after a print or jpeg work out what you think is a fair price.
You could check out the nuj site to get an idea of prices..
The copyright should stay with you!

They want to use the image for magazine articles / prints.

They would be after prints or Jpeg for their own use. I'm happy to supply them with the image but I honestly don't know how much it's worth. I don't want to under price my self nor overprice the image.

The image itself didn't take that long, as well as editing about and hour. Id like to think for the Digital Image it would be worth between 50-200 pounds.
 
If they want it for a magizine I'd check out alamys prices, and you can give them a limited licence to reproduce it but you still retain the copyright.

As I will only be in this area for the next year or so If the price is right I'd let them have unlimited use to the image as long as I kept the copyright in this case and the price was right.

I talk to them to agree on a price on Wednesday, any tips when negotiating.

I WILL NOT take the first offer :thumbs:
 
Does the Alamy price calculator thing have an option for buying copyright? As said you might be better selling an unlimited usage license rather than giving them copyright - in case you want to use it down the line.

Offering people pricing info is extremely difficult. :shrug:

To try and put things in some sort of context though..I recently had a photo published on the front cover of a small/regional publication (A5 size) with usage limited to this single issue and they paid me £150. Considering your customer is asking for copyright and wishes to use it for their own promotional use even £200 sounds a little low to me.

Just my thoughts

I'll definitely not sell them the copyright, just usage. The only thing im concerned about is the price not meeting my expectations.

£150 just to use it on a few publications :eek:

So if I ballpark £300-400 for Unlimited use I should......should be on the right path. :shrug:

Not spoken to you since the beginning of the 52. Unfortunately I lost track through moving house and decided to pack it in. Must try again in 2011. :thumbs:
 
A friend of mine was asked to sell a full and exclusive copyright on a picture, he asked for £2000 and was knocked down to £1600
He then went back and took more photos of the subject.

But must say, the original image doesn't do anything for me. Looks out of focus and bent.

But oh well. If someone wants to buy it, then let em buy it.
