Wasn't sure what section to post this in but I have done a fair few time lapses and hyper lapses now and I want to put them all into one video along with music. What exactly can I do with the music for the video? Could I get done for using someone elses music on my video and if so how can I go about getting permission to use it? Is there any backing tracks/music out there that isn't covered by copyright and is available for the public to use for videos?

I'm only wanting to put it on Youtube. any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers. I don't want to be taken away in cuffs for posting a video on Youtube lol.

if the owner finds out they usually just ask/tell you to take it down hth mike.

There is music on youtube you can use free of charge. Under creation tools in your dashboard. Youtubes auto recognition for music is very, very good. Your video will either get blocked if its listed in their copyright database or you will just get told about it.

Thanks all. There's a few I'm going to have a play around with, especially some of the cinematic ones on Youtube. Some of them will go pretty well with a time lapse.

Moby released his back catalogue for not for profit creative use.

Check moby gratis.

It's good you pointed that out because the Villa remix of "Wait for me" is one of the ones I was wanting to use in the first place. Cheers.(y)

Wait For Me is a popular choice for the time lapse, I've used it myself. Try searching for the music, a lot of single musicians license some great music for exposure.

if its just for personal use and not commercial then you can use the majority of whatever you want. Put it on youtube and you'll find out if it was ok or not. if it was not they'll remove it, if it was then you'll get some ads on your vid

You won't. It's a civil offence, not a criminal offence.

There are often two copyrights involved with music:

1. The copyright of the music itself. e.g. the rights of the writer.

2. The copyright in the recording.

It is possible to have a piece of music for which the writer's copyright has expired but the recording is still protected.

e.g. a piece of music written by Mozart no longer has any protection as Mozart has been dead for quite a few years but an album of Mozart's music recorded last week will have full copyright protection in the recording.

I know a few people who write royalty-free music - it's something I'm going to be doing with some of my free time soon, I'll post a link to it when I've finally pulled my finger out and done it!!

Thanks all. It's going to be a while till I get enough footage for the video anyway. I'm waiting to start it after my summer trip to Egypt working in Dahab. Hopefully I'll get a lot of good night time lapses with all the nice mountainous scenery around there. Unsure of taking the camera gear on camel back though lol
