Edit My Images
Yes
Hi all,

I've read some interesting posts on the forum about copyright and websites and have a question.

If you use image manipulation software to create an image, say a logo for a website, how much change needs to be made before the new image is no longer the origional artists? This is actually aimed at non photographic images, similar to cartoons or avatars etc.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Comus

Technically, if you've used someone elses work as a starting point then the new piece will still be derived from the original.

Back in the real world, if you've changed it beyond recognition then it's hardly likely to matter.

Whether it'll be a problem is a combination of factors, from how recognisable the original image is, to what the new image is for, to how greedy the copyright holder is. It's a tough one to call.

i didnt think you were allowed to edit a copyrighted file in any way without permission. so i would say it wouldnt matter how much you edited the copyright stands with the original owner, however, the question comes will the original owner ever be able to recognise it.

Yes you really got caught on this occasion. It's disappointing how devious some can be. The positive is that you got paid and you'll learn for next time. The risks are if the edits are not up to scratch then there will be a limited audience only viewing the final images. They may be good edits. I'd say to you to try to put this down to experience and don't loose a good friend.

Thanks for the advice guys. I may have to explore some other means of creating a 'cartoon' image as a logo for my website.

I just read this thread! I love it when threads get mixed up and the reader still understands!

Make it unrecognizable and you've got nothing to worry about.
