Is this just simply adding your name and © to your pictures?

Even if you are a beginner? I haven't really seen the point as I doubt any of my pictures would be decent enough for someone to steal them and use them.

Also, I've noticed on Flickr says under Owner Settings, © All rights reserved.
Does this mean there is no need to add a water mark to your photos if you are using Flickr??

You dont need to put anything on your images unless a contract etc says otherwise.

Copyright is with the photographer whether they are beginner or pro.

You, as the author of your images, automatically own copyright to them no matter if you do, or do not add a notice of some kind. The only exception to this is if you take photographs for an employer, in which case, unless they specify otherwise, they own the copyright.

It's usually best practice to add a copyright notice however, but a big gopping watermark is just not necessary in most cases.

One thing you do not automatically have however, is Moral Rights. These are your rights to be attributed as the author if published, the right to not have your work altered, or edited without your permission also. You have to assert these rights by including the words "All Moral Rights Asserted" along with your copyright notification. Exceptions to Moral Rights are magazine and news publications, who have no obligation to attribute your work.

The accepted format would be:

©2013 Firstname Lastname. All Moral Rights Asserted.

They do still have an obligation to obtain permission, though, right? At which point, you have the option to refuse to grant it without attribution (though doing so may dissuade them from using your image/s at all, and paying for the rights).

Absolutely. I just meant adding "All Moral Rights Asserted" does not guarantee attribution in a newspaper or magazine. It can still be a condition of sale or use if you wish it to be though.

Does any one have a easy instruction of how to place this copywrite on photos, Ive tried youtube and really cannot get how to do it

Depends on what software you use. You can add it to the exif info (Photoshop menu file - file info) or use tye type tool and add it manually. If you embed it into the exif info it stays there in jpeg unless you do 'save for web and devices' which strips it out.

You lost me strait away. I did ask for an easy way of doing this, maybe there isnt one.

Two easy ways are photoscape and faststone, both free programs too!

Thanks for the replies, wasn't sure if you HAD to add something to your images. Anything I share is through Flickr and its really just so I can get comments back on whats good/bad with what I'm shooting.

And I say again, I doubt any of my shots would be good enough from someone to want to use them!

Colin, Im not to great at taking photo's either but recently had one copied on FB and reposted on a fishing forum claiming it was his, I had to prove it was mine by sending the raw file to one of the mods before they would take it down Hence why i would like to know how to copywrite photos, but I aint very clued up in digital world

I suppose, I would still be surprised if someone used my image but I never know.

What software do you have at your disposal?

I have CS6 and DPP and photoshop 5 limited edition but to be honest ive not a clue how to use them, except just learnt how to convert RAW files and reduce image size.

picasa 3 gives you the option to put a copyright notice on the front of a photo picasa is also free

Thanks to all for your help on this, specially Nick who posted the link, as I've been wanting to try this for a while and have been totally lost trying to do it. I'm using PSE11 and had to go onto the 'Expert' mode to be able to find the 'magic extraction tool' and with a bit of fiddling about I've managed to get it working.

The hardest part for me was working out how to get the watermark to show up on the photo, but again after a bit of fiddling about and I managed to get it working.

Mark, I don't know if it would be possible for someone to make a watermark for you, save it as a brush, and then email the brush to you for you to copy into your program.

Why can not not type 0169 on a laptop? It has number keys doesn't it?

Magic Extractor = Magic Wand. He used PSE for that tutorial, but it's the same thing.

[edit].. just remembered it only works from the numeric keypad... which you wont have.

Sorry that doesnt work i cannot type the 0169 on a laptop
And there is no "magic extraction tool"

It does work, i also use PS CS5 and it can be done on that too. Most laptops have numbers assigned to the letter keys - if yours doesn't you could just copy and paste the © symbol in :)

Hi nick, thanks for your patience I had allready thought about copy and pasting the (C) symbol but i really cannot find these magic extractors or magic wands on PS6, below is a screenshot of my default PS6 page.

Hi Mark, it's the 4th tool down in the left hand bar. If you right click it you should get more options (or they may appear at the top of the page) - I can't remember on CS5 as its on my very slow work laptop so I usually use PSE at home.

If you still can't find it ill have a look at work tomorrow and let you know

Yep.. 4th one down, but you don't have to right click it... just click and hold and the menu pops out.

You want Magic Wand.

Is adding "All Rights Reserved" a useful cover all or should it be specifically "All moral rights asserted" ? I currently use the All rights approach and am now wondering if it's sufficient......

Also just to throw into the mix - on all the Canon's I've had (5D, 5DII and 600D) you can use the EOS utility to set the copyright text in the camera - that way it's automatically added into the EXIF data of every image at source.

You don't need to use any selection tool, you can just press Control (PC) and click on the 'T' on the text layer to make the selection. :)

It amounts to the same thing, but "All Moral Rights Asserted" makes it specific and unambiguous.

Cheers for clarifying - there are plenty of wrong assumptions out there so can see the value in the 'specific and unambiguous' approach!
