Copying setting from one layer to another

Still trying to get to grips with PS CS5. I have an image that I have edited and wreaked in a few places. I had the same image on another layer so didn't think it was a problem so created a reveal mask and started revealing the destroyed parts. Unfortunately I have changed the colour/levels/saturation and probably some other tweaks on the top layer and now the layer below that I'm exposing to repair is not the same colour etc. Is there a way of setting the bottom layer to the same settings as the top layer so the reveal works seamlessly?

Thanks in advance.

Claw sounds good before the event, unfortunately this is after the event. Tried it - it didn't work.

Show me your layer palette.

Hey Jonathan, I'd flattened the layers down. I then closed the image to reopen the saved one I thought I had and completely messed it up and started again! So thanks for the input.

Ah. You flattened it. You're stuffed ;)

Ha Ha - I seem to do that alot in PS! Slowly getting there. Why the step backwards button doesn't work to infinity is beyond me :runaway:;)

Although it won't help now. You can set your back one step/undo change (Command, option Z on MAC) to exceed more than the standard 20 changes.
Go to Photoshop, Preferences, General, Performance and increase the number of history states. Normally its defaulted to 20. Take note however the more state changes you ask it to record the slower the performance of your machine.

Thanks for the tip!

I suspect the Undo limit is to save memory. This would be needed when operation is saved in a temporary buffer. Some, non image editor, programs can go back to infinity if they can save the parameters of each command and replay it or unplay it. In fact some software natively stores the results as a replay sequence. However in many graphical applications, the file would just keep getting bigger the more you worked on it.

Thanks for the input, was meant a bit tongue in cheek though.

I see. But it's still a valid complaint. And I like to dwell on nerdy usability things anyway.
