Just seen that Copilot is only £25.99 on iphone for UK and Ireland maps :D which is a massively cheaper price than handigo is selling tomtom for on preorder.

I am downloading it now, have seen quite a few good reviews on it from its other versions already.

I am not great at reviewing but will put a few things up when I have tested it later. so watch this space for :thumbs: or :thumbsdown:

fingers crossed its good, I really cant afford to spend tomtom prices for it and sat nav was one of the reasons I got the iphone (my directional skillls leave little to be desired :lol: )
 
ok thought I would have to wait until I was on the way to work to test it out, but it is picking up my location from inside the house which is good so I have had a little play,
All seems pretty good, cant seem to turn off the annoying beep when pressing for options though
Voices available are not annoying
Maps are very up to date ( going by the presence of the new Turnpike Junction in north Swindon which has been open for only 6 months or so)
Setting up a route was easy

oh one important thing, if a route is running and you get a call, when you hangup copilot restarts and goes to the route you had within about 30 seconds, long journey thats great, in town not so good but the same as running satnav on my old N95 (will test it propery on the road later)

If anyone is interested and wants to know anything specific let me know and I will try to help out but first impressions im very happy.:)
 
hmm interesting, i find the supplied iphone satnav is a bit slow, if im out walking and a, using that unit to get where im going it does tend to lag behind my casual stroll...its got to be good for £25 to get my money though!
 
Before I start I was a passenger on route to work, I am not quite that irresponsible to drive in pouring rain and fiddle with a sat nav :D

Ok, just had first run of this on way to work and no problems.

Fairly similar set of options to TomTom, very easy and user friendly to scroll through, you can customise the display to show your speed, arrrival time, distance to go, altitude or heading. change the distance before alerts pop up etc.

in the 'my places' section you can set your home location, a work location, your recent trips and then your favourites, pretty much standard.

To plan a route you have the option of picking a point on the map which is pretty quick to scroll around the map.

or you can go to the address page where u can put the post code in etc for note if like my workplace your address is in a postcode but doesnt have a number on the road you can put the post code in and then move around the area to get the correct location which is good.

When a route is planned and you are on your journey you can go to a quick stop option and say you want to go to a petrol station, hotel etc you can add it 'onroute' which is also handy.

the Detour option in the menu also works well as does the weather (although knowing the local weather is a lottle pointless :P )

If the sat nav is on and you get a phone call, after the call the copilot opens up straight away and your journey continues, although you do get a mini option screen that seems to pop up and has to be cancelled ( about the only annoying thing I found)

If the sat nav is on and you get a text message the message preview pops up as normal over copilot. If you close it then the journey resumes as normal, if you reply to the message, copilot closes, you loose your currnet journey and you have to put it in again when re-opening the application, not really aproblem as if driving u shouldn't be replying to txt messages and if not driving it only takes 4 clicks to get back to the directions.

The backlight stays lit the whole time sat nav is running and you can set it to auto rotate if the iphone is put on its side.

All in all I am really pleased with it so far, cant see any major issues although havent used every item but I wont really use it any more than today for different journeys.

definately a :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs: from me, works much better than google maps which I always find slow and unreliable if signal not great, I dont get on with paper maps and dont want a seperate sat nav unit in the car

again if anyone thinks of anything and wants me to take a look let me know, more than happy to try things out on it.
 
How does it handle the direction you are facing/travelling in? Is it just the. 3Gs that has the compass ability? Or does it use the gps to work out what way you are facing on an ordinary 3G?

accuracy was really good, much better than garmin on my n95

not sure about the speed cameras, will have a look if i get chance tonight, working nights so gives me something to do :D

just seen online that speed cameras will be available in next update from copilot, you can get them if your iphone is jailbroken already it looks like but im happy to wait, not go and drink some more beer and forget about them for now :)

There are ways to do it. If your Iphone is Jailbroken and you have the camera file in the right format, you can get the POI imported. Have just upgraded mine to 3.9.1 so will need to jailbreak it to do this.

Was going to use Redsn0w to do this. Is that the best way? Anyone know of a better piece of software?
 
Are you running this on the 3G or 3Gs? I'm interested in how it handles your direction if you've only got the 3G which doesn't have the build in compass.

I've got the 3G, it knows what direction you are going in by tracking multiple Global Positioning Satellites which orbit the earth which enables it to reveal your latitude, longitude and speed.

Any Sat nav system can get the direction wrong when you fire them up and are stationary but as soon as you start to move with the above tracking you know your direction.

At least thats my non technical half asleep take on things :D

(for all I know it may be a lie and is really the little pixies who sit on top of my phone taunting me :cuckoo: ) :lol:

If its the same as the copilot for Android, I was reading that you have to pay additional fee (about £40) for 2 years support to receive the speed camera updates and also the "live traffic" feed and fuel price/garage information.

Its still not a bad price for a Nav software but I don't think I will be leaving the sat nav for this on my iPhone.

apparently the updates will be free, so thats pretty cool.
traffic info will cost though, but fair enough

im waiting for my £2.99 iphone dash mount before i try it properly and review it

Apparently you do not need the safety camera activation.

Instead of looking at your satnav, look at the speed signs on the roadside and keep your speed limit within the figures given. Free Safety Camera Software.

Brilliant.
 
Or look at the road and drive at a speed suitable for the conditions and let the satnav tell you if you're going faster than people in offices have deemed safe for that bit of road...

This is useful information but there is a poor girl at work who has just got 3 fixed penalty notices for doing 36mph on the same stretch of road which is 30mph over about a week. She had a clean licence and knows that camera is there. She slowed down till her speedo said 30mph......

It has gone faulty !!!! She borrowed a sat nav to prove that her speedo was ok and that there must be a fault with the camera only to find that it was actually wrong and she WAS speeding.
 
I use this on an Android phone and it's brilliant. Handles GPS accurately and recalculates routes quick. As said before the maps are very up to date.

It did drop my battery pretty quick when using it but that's why I have a car charger :P

Well I took the plunge and bought it. I have to say it is well worth the £26 squid.
A few points I have noticed though, it dosent like it if your location is offroad, say in a park or a large carpark. It tries to place you on the neatest road which does confuse it a bit. Once you are on the road though, it's fine. The position updates are a little slow, I suspect this I'd more down to the phones processor working hard to keep up with where it is and moving the map about. Most annoying this is that it tells you to turn right just AFTER you have done it! It needs to prompt you just that lil bit earlier. Yes it does eat the battery a bit, in fact you can feel the back of the phone get warm after a while. I would suggest getting a car adaptor to keep it topped up while you are driving. It is too quiet to hear properly in a car environment but you could use it with one of those wee FM transmitter thingys and run it through your car radio.
With all the poi turned on, it can get a bit cluttered so it is best to turn these off unless you need em. The speed camera Add on will be very handy when it comes out.

So, in summary, it does what it says on the tin and compared to similar software/units it is an absolute bargain! If they could speed up ghe updating a wee bit and make the announcement just that wee bit earlier, I'd say Big Thumbs Up and Five Stars!
 
I've heard that Tomtom for iPhone is going to arrive very soon, and that it will be a lot more expensive than this...
 
tomtom is in the app store for £ 60, or I think its about £ 100 with a dash mount, car charger and signal booster.

I've got an HTC Hero now running Android and I'm tempted with Co-pilot.

Thats quite a lot of cash,wonder what happend if you change iphones/upgrade?

Wow we just found the only person in the UK that doesnt go over the speed limit.

Knowing where the speed cameras are is also a good way to tell where the accident black spots are, but i also like to know where i need to slow down so i dont get a ticket.
 
I thought this type of satnav was slower as it triangulates the position from the sim card via the phone masts? This is why you get a location fix indoors?

Or am i wrong?

I like it so far.. only problems are its a bit buggy and doesnt always start up, i would like to zoom in to the map a bit closer, the voice doesnt turn off (unless you turn the volume on the iphone down) and the back roads arent accurately drawn.. On a TomTom you can see when a sharp corner is coming up, on Co-Pilot a 90 degree bend can look like a slight kink!
 
Going into settings and changing the default profile helps with accuracy

iPhone does both, if it can't get a GPS lock it triangulates from phone masts which obviously reduces accuracy to around 100m I think. When a suitable GPS signal is available it uses that. I'm guessing though that both TomTom and Co-Pilot will only use the GPS signal as mast triangulation would not be accurate enough
