I hated coal as a kid. It was dirty and smelled horrible when it burned. It covered the streets where I lived in black soot and was heavy to haul about in buckets to feed the "home fires"! I remember the "smokeless zones" when evrybody changed to "coke" (which was made by part burning coal anyway to produce town gas) or the new fangled "North Sea Gas"! It seems that China and India have put the mockers on a ban and will just slow down on its use. Just not good enough, I'm afraid. I, for one, will not be buying anything from India or China (although I can see that I will struggle with that) in the future. We need to let them know that the rest of the world is not happy with them. I've stopped buying "stuff" that just fills my house, shed and garage because it is cheap. It does not last and most of the time, I just don't need it. I am also not buying anything made of plastic for my grandkids. I will do everything I can to reverse this horrible world situation in my own, small way. I apologise to the young people of the planet for my wasteful and selfish actions of the past. Please join me if you can.

It was always going to be a copout and anyone who thought anything else is quite frankly only fooling themselves. Money talks, always has a!ways will. The fossil fuel producers make too much money to ever think of giving it up.

If the whole world went carbon free, apart from the big 4 polluters it would make almost zero difference to what we have now,

Mind you the way things are going with China and Russia building up their arsenal's all paid for by the west pumping billions into their economies through buying coal and gas from them I think a 1.5deg rise in temperature is the least of our worries, I can see it getting very much hotter very quickly if there is not a rethink soon. :(

Given the fact this was cop26 I wasn't really expecting anything different from the previous 25 tbh....

Yeah, I was shocked when I realised how it got its name. Maybe it should be counting down. I think we're at about minus 8.

Given that the oil producers had the largest delegation to the conference, I read, you can imagine the amount of back-room bribery.
China will only ever decide things based on its own interests, and India is such a mess of corruption and self-interest...there is much to love about both countries, but their politicians leave a vast amount to be desired.
Unfortunately the west, and UK in particular, has sold itself to the devil when it comes to consumer goods manufacture, and I think it will be extremely hard to avoid China-built products. Indian goods are I think less of a problem.

Exactly and many of those attending were looking for handouts/brown envelopes etc.

You need to realise that Russia has a fraction of the military budget which the US has - a tiny fraction.

I think anybody who thinks that if they stop buying Chinese goods they will have some effect is deluded. Firstly just because something says it was made in another country doesn't mean it hasn't got any parts that were made in China. Secondly even if we all stopped buying from China (some chance) then they would just move their market somewhere else.

Not me, thank you. China is following the same path that Japan took from 1945 to the 1990s: finding new ways to make high quality products in high volumes, so that those who want them, can afford them.

I can't help but feel that 95% of this demonisation of China is simply a rehash of the "Yellow Peril" racism promoted by the Germans from the 1870s onwards and taken up with great gusto by both the USA and Canada thereafter.

When Apple get million of iPhones, iPads etc manufactured in China who is the polluter America or China?

You obviously haven't seen the "quality" of their "OEM" car parts after they have failed within a few months of being fitted. Wheel bearings that have excess play and no grease in them when new and suspension assemblies with bad or missing welds, that collapse within days of fitting!!! Don't even get me started on plumbing and electrical items that are positively dangerous and have to be "recalled"! (assuming that you actually get notified by your supplier). I check that all wiring on electrical goods are sound before I plug them in these days after finding loose wires and missing insulators.

Yes, in any rapidly expanding economy there will be rogues. Of course, that will be the problem on which some people will choose to focus but I think we should always beware of prejudice clouding our thinking.

Many Chinese products are of excellent quality, which is why China is used as a manufacturing base by several high quality brand owners. Some examples include: Airbus, Apple, Coach (handbags) and Mercedes. Several Chinese brands are also seen as quality guarantors themselves, such as Huawei and Xiaomi. Even the cheap "nameless" products are often excellent. I have several Chinese made electronics items which cost little but perform well.

I am no longer surprised when people quote China as being the big polluter.

1. It has over 1 000 000 000 people, work out the pollution per head of population.
2. It produces goods for most of the world, we are just exporting our pollution.
3. Yes it is continuing with coal, as is the USA and Australia, but it is also installing more renewables than almost anywhere else.

Wait until the COP26 news has died down and Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson announces the new coal mine and oil field in the UK!

well said mate outsourcing of pollution its just so convenient

COP 26 isn't a cop-out but it is a big kick in the face to nations like ours who are over consuming and over polluting per person.
with our excessive use of dirty fuels like diesel and pathetic use of things like wood burning stoves because its hip and cool.
India is like the UK 40 years ago it needs time to adjust it can't just buy into electric vehicles just because we the rich west want to offset all our pollution damage

China is the same we may look at them as a powerful superpower but a huge amount of there population live hand to mouth.
the UK/US and the rest of the developed world have caused most of the damaging pollution over the last 50 years and need to support the rest of the world in making the change.

We also need to set a better example, we need to move faster away from ICE and fossil fuels and move to a cleaner environment

The story of Austin Rover\British Leyland in a sentence.

China is using masses of fossil fuel generated energy to produce the goods that much of the rest of the world buy in vast quantities. We are all contributing to the problem in China.
In little over 70 years earth's population has risen from 2 billion to 8 billion. There are already far too many people sucking the life out of this planet.

its easy to blame China and India because the Western media seems to have trained us to do so to move the blame and take away attention from themselves.

Per capita UK is more polluting (by twice the amount) than India and US is more polluting than both China and India (twice more than China).

Developed countries pushing their weight on developing countries to kill their development is a real kick in the balls for them.
Basically what you are saying is China and India should cut down on their emissions so people in the western world such as yourself can continue with their polluting lifestyles.

I'm saying that they need to stop doing what we have done for the last two hundred years because we got it wrong and we can all learn from our mistakes. Our polluting lifestyles have to change right now for the good of the poor souls left on the planet after we have gone.

sure but do you have an alternative for them?
is anyone willing to share their technology or expertise? perhaps share some nuclear tech or help with building some reactors to supply clean energy? or help building hydro electric plants perhaps (lot of potential for that in China/India)?

no people just want to them to give up a cheap source energy which will only hamper their growth and not actually improve anything. We have done that for the last 200 years because it worked to get us where we are and they are going through exactly the same journey unless someone is less selfish and actually helps them with alternatives. Considering there are people bickering about the minuscule amount of foreign aid I highly doubt that'll ever happen.
then there is the part where we continue to embrace, invest and love our oil companies but lets not talk about that :p

tl;dr - we are all doomed, no point in complaining or blaming others. We are as much to blame for the problem as others.

I do hope that there is, somewhere, a group of people asking questions like, " what's our plan for coping with a billion washed out refugees?" "What's our plan for when Florida and London disappear?" Questions like that.

I suspect my hope is misplaced.

there are but no one care about them because they aren't billionaires. Our governments are all about making our billionaires a bit richer.
