Coohullin's 52 - Week 26 Beginnings (pg 10)

Looks delicious....

Ian.

Nice take on the theme Carl and nice composition.

Think I'd have gone for that one too... :)

It works very well, excellent take on the theme

Well the choccies were indeed lovely - a little too rich for me (more a Cadbury's Dairy Milk kind of guy!) but the folks in the office made short work of them! Thanks to everyone on their comments.

So on we go to Week 19 - Ingredients.....was determined to use whatever I had in the house and not buy anything special for the shot....and as a single guy I must admit there wasn't a great deal of choice (should really use the fridge for more than booze!). Not a very inspiring theme for me and so the shots are fairly uninspired too.

1) Having enjoyed a few Peroni last night....

2) Not a coffee drinker but .....

I agree. The first shot is a slightly unusual angle for a shot like this, which makes it interesting.

#1 for me too Carl. Interesting composition and dof. The point of focus on the ingredients makes it bang on theme. As above, #2 just looks a wee bit cluttered. Good job

Nice work, Carl. Really captures the action.

I like the way you can see him trying to control the direction of the car but its not having any of it. Great shot.

Nice action shot. He's putting so much effort into it but we all know the outcome.
Out of the 2 shots I think I prefer the 1st one.

Nice action shots. Particularly of interest as I used to own a Westfield. Glad to see the gravel frozen in the air to make the movement obvious.

Phil

Really good action shot there Carl. The spray of gravel really adds to the drama.

Ian.

Ingredients, I'm with the others on the beer bottle, the others are too cluttered. Great action shots for Stop, love the spray of gravel too.

Thanks for the comments on Stop! guys. I was actually on that corner to take some shots of a guy I used to work for and was just taking a few shots to get my settings and position sorted when this guy came out of the corner in some difficulty.....managed to capture some of his exploits into the kitty-litter at least.

On to Week 21 Isolation.....well I really struggled to come up with something for this one. However it was Eurovision last night (and no, I didn't watch it!) and so I was inspired by Ireland's 1965 entry (and very first entry too I believe), 'Walking the Streets in the Rain' sung by Butch Moore (who was English by the way).

And so here it is......but rather than hiding my tears in the raindrops I isolate myself in the bathroom and let my emotions (and feelings of desperate isolation) out in the solitude of a shower (where no-one else can hear you sob!!!!).

Sorry Carl. I've lapsed a bit on comments in the last couple of weeks.
I'm with the crowd on ingredients (definitely the first one for me), and very impressive capture(s) for stop.

But those are absolutely blown away by your isolation shots.
Those are two seriously powerful images . . . I'm a bit lost for words with them. It always seems to have more emotional impact to see a man crying than a woman - I guess because it's more socially acceptable for a woman to show emotion in public.

Both of those just scream pure anguish to me. They're brilliantly executed and the addition of running water from the shower is just genius. I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite, but I think the closer crop in the first one just has a bit more impact for me.

I just hope that was acting and that you weren't really feeling like that.

WOW
2 powerful images, both emotional and seem to tell a story. The lighting is spto on and detail is perfect.

Sarah, many thanks for your kind comments and concern....rest assured it was all for the camera....not sure if I felt like that I would be worrying about camera settings....and after taking 3 showers yesterday morning with left hand holding remote trigger outside of shower cubicle and then jumping in and out of bath where tripod was perched to check the pics it was hysteria of a different sort that had taken hold!!!! ;)

ISOLATION: the first is a great emotive shot, the PP works wonderfully and is shocking as Sarah says because you associate this with women more than men, which adds more power to the image, great job ;)

The reason I chose a different idea than the portrait I'd planned was because I saw these shots on your Flickr, Carl. I knew I cuoldn't beat them. Awesomely powerful.

I agree with the others.

Very powerful, emotive shots.

The lighting, composition and black and white conversion all go with the subject to create two very strong images

Andy

Another who agrees, very powerful images full of emotion, they work so well Carl

Thanks to all for the comments on last week....am very pleased with the shots I must admit.

Week 22 Quality - oh boy.....struggled to come up with something for this one but I ended up with a 'quality' Sunday newspaper but decided I would go with 'Never mind the quality feel the width!' given the doorsteps that you now get on a Sunday.

an oxymoron if ever I heard one. ;)

Looks like a product shot, mate, but a little underexposed, maybe?

Not really sure on this one Carl... it's really not doing much for me... Sorry that's totally unhelpful I know...

As for the theme, the Sunday Times is considered to be (or was anyway) one of the quality papers...

I can understand the reasoning with the "quality" paper but it looks a little flat for me. In fact, suspiciously so :suspect: Did you iron the papers before you took the shot? :D

Andy

i kind of agree with the flat critiques, maybe it could be improved with a couple of hands holding them up and a steaming brew? Crap theme though so you have a unique take this week. Also agree that the media have little sway with me and consistently seem to present news in a biased and judgemental way showing a distinct lack of quality. For that reason I've stopped buying a paper now.

Well I can see my lack of faith in today's media is quite widely shared.....thanks for the comments and no, the paper wasn't ironed before I took the shot although I shall remember that tip for next time!

And onto Week 23: Post - and I have for some reason stuck with newspapers again....think I preferred my booze themed shots a few weeks ago!

But anyway, here it is - I am posting an image of the Yorkshire Evening Post posted through my letterbox.......

Definitely says post & I like the idea + the crispness of the end of the newspaper. I think it would have been better if you'd included more of the letterbox to give it context & perhaps taken from a slight angle.

Phil

I was just going to say that almost verbatim!

I'm not sure. I think the alternative version lacks the drama.

Carl, image #2 gets my vote. I like the lighting and composition of it.
I like your first image too, I can see where Dean is coming from but #2 just shades it. Iain

I like the angle of the paper in the first one but do like seeing the letter box to give the context in the second !
