#3 gets my vote Carl, I like the composition, having the person in the shot at the bottom gives it a real sense of scale. #1 & #2 are IMHO not as strong as the head of the "Angel" cannot be seen and this takes something away from the images. Iain

Have to agree with Iain, the 3rd you get a sense of how big the "Angel" really is.

Hi Carl, I agree with the others and really love number 3. The composition is really good and the person really gives it scale. Excellent and bang on theme.

I have been meaning to stop by the Angel every time I go up North but have never managed it yet.

Jenny

Carl, really liking #3, that really is a mamoth statue. However, I do like #1 also, the colour and texture and abstractness really works for me.

Agree #3 certainly gives a sense of scale but I also like the others showing the detail and texture of the statue

#3 certainly catches the eye and shows the scaleof the statue.

Funny i was in North Yorkshire this week and nearly drove up to get some of this, my other idea was to go to the YSP and get some of Gormleys other sculptures. I'm not widely versed on sculpture but i do like his work and what he tries to achieve. They are all good images but i like 3 best for the better colour and contrast in the sky.

I seem to be being really awkward this week - I may be on my own, but it's number 1 for me.

Definitely the colour version to bring out all those tones, but I just love the abstract feel of it. The curves and the textures are all just more evident in this version.

I quite like number 3, but it's just not as visually appealing to me as the other angle that you've chosen.

number 3 for me too, had to look twice as i read that there was a person stood next to the angel.

Certainly gives a sense of its large wings, also has a feeling that you are under its wing now and looked after.

Definitely no.1 for me - you don't need to get it all in to make a striking picture. The lighting is excellent, bringing out the lovely colours and textures.

I've taken the liberty of trying a more contrasty B&W conversion, playing around with the different channels. Just to show the possibilities of this image - I'll remove it if you would rather.

Really do need to catch up with things here! Well we shall start with 3.

Relaxation - just back from a few days motorcycling around Scotland with my stepfather.....after a very (and I do mean VERY) wet day on the Isle of Skye we headed for the mainland but before we left the sun came out so we took a few moments out to appreciate the view:

Grace - my little niece on her 1st birthday

Endings -

Your 3rd shot of the Angel of the North is great, nice composition.
Relaxation: I get what your going for, but something about it doesnt look relaxed, maybe his pose, the stormy skies!?

Grace: nice shot - a little light in the eyes needed i think, perhaps a bit more space to look into, but still a good shot.

Endings: Great, well lit and says it all ;)

:plusone:

Can't but it any better than Dade. Skye doesn't look very sunny either - maybe it's all relative!

Relaxation: Well, considering how wet it (and no doubt both of you!) were, it does look fairly relaxing - and peaceful. Lovely view to enjoy. :)

Grace: Awww - she's gorgeous. I agree it would be better for a bit more space for her to look into, but she's so cute.

Endings: A good take on the theme - and we've all been there, trying to squeeze one more blob out of an empty tube.

I can see another shot in this too - slightly to your left and zooming in on the ribbon of toothpaste in sharp focus with a hint of the tube in the background!

Jean

Carl, sorry I've missed your thread over the past few weeks so a little catch up:

Art - Great angles. Number three gets my vote - great composition and the sense of scale with the person in the shot really works.

Relaxation - Certainly fits the theme - would love to spend some relaxation time there!

Grace - Nice shot, a little dark around the eyes maybe and would have liked her looking 'into' the frame rather than out.

Endings - Again, fits the theme. The tube is slightly distracting to me. I would either blur the tube more or crop in more tightly.

Carl, another catchup here...

Relaxation, Whilst the post might not shout relaxed, slightly hunched, maybe against the weather... the situation he's in, and the thoughtful comtemplation I can see here makes it work for me.

Grace, a lovely shot, Something has caught her eye, and you know, I like the composition as it stands. Just needs a little something, perhaps a squirt of flash to provide some catchlights, the eyes are a little dark.

Endings, great idea, but there's loads of paste left in that tube ... I like the sharp paste and spout, and the rest blurred.

Well not been around for a while.....believe it or not I have been busy getting to grips with life back in education......20 years since leaving school and I am now pursuing a degree in Photography! (although very little time for taking pics at the minute!)

Anyway, shall resume my catch up....apologies but not in order and not a complete catch up but shall get there before the fast approaching end of year!

So only transform; surfaces; project; film; dirty; rage; secret; urban and train to go!

Last one for the evening.....this is from Judy Woods in Bradford. Went there with college a couple of weeks ago armed with a film camera and a roll of B&W film. I printed this in the darkroom a couple of days ago and scanned it in.

Week 37 - Film:

Welcome back (again) Carl.
Hope your degree is going well. Must be a huge shock to the system to be doing something like that.

There are 3 real standout shots for me here :

Film : Fantastic quality. I would never have guessed that this had been scanned in. I love the subject matter and particularly the play of light and shadows that you've caught.

Secret : Another standout shot. Really well executed and the fact that you've just focused in on their feet adds to the sense of mystery. It's all left up to the viewer's imagination, but I see her reaching up to whisper something in his ear.

Console : Beautiful, sensitive and elegant. The DoF and focus is perfect.

Not so keen on mobile - too much blur in this for me, but the others all work well.
Interesting lighting in "light"; I like the reflections and quality of light in electric and distant actually comes very close to making my top 3

Well done for catching up as far as this. I prefer the mono ones - my favourite is "secret" which is brilliantly thought out and executed. Distant almost works but the mountains almost disappear into the sky - maybe you could do something with filters in the conversion, or is it shot on film?

Excellent catch up Carl... some great shots in there... the standouts for me are Secret, Console and Distant... they all work great.

Well done on the catch-up! Console and distant are my picks of the last few.

Phil

Hi - I've just started looking through the 52 threads as I've just started mine although nowhere in the same league as some of these! I really like your Distant shot - I could imagine being there. Secret is quite intriging (sorry can't spell!).

Gai

Great catchup Carl.

Distant stands out for me as does Light.

Once again, many thanks to all for your kind comments....much appreciated!

Week 32 - Transform: how a phobia can transform someone's life....in this instance....the fear of outside....agorophobia

Week 34 - Surfaces: I have posted a version of this shot on the forum before but not used it within my 52....so here is the underside of Crown Point Bridge in Leeds and the water that it spans....

Week 36 - Project: currently doing a project in college looking at fears and phobias (hence Transform above) but here are some more from the set so far:

fear of confined spaces....claustrophobia

Me again....!

Week 38 - Dirty: well most stairwells in multi-storey car parks leave me feeling like I need a good wash so here you go....

Week 43 - Urban:

Week 46 - Faith: I was mucking about in the studio with a friend a few days ago and we had a hallelujah moment!

5175792931_6dcd84ddba_z.jpg

So that leaves me with rage, train and share to go....I think!

You've done a great job catching up there Carl. All look good to me

well done on catching up. Faith - can't make up my mind if I want to see more of the face.. I have looked a couple of times and keep changing gmy mind !

Yes - good catch up & the same quandary! I think a slightly less steep angle, but still looking up would have been perfect, but nice idea & good execution.

Phil

Superb catch up Carl.

You have some great shots in these. I particularly like Transform. Very clever image for the theme. Very well composed.

I also like your Project series. Ones that stand out are Fear of clowns - Frightning image and Fear of the Dark - very well lit.
