Convince me NOT to get an iphone

My mobile is my only phone, no landline. My old vodaphone contract was due for renewal, I was paying £35 a month on contract but frequently when over as I used it for everything so ended up paying nearly £45 a month without web browsing etc.

New iphone £45/month 1200 free mins, 3000 texts unlimited Internet/WAP (fair use policy) 24 month contract so no payment for phone. Believe me I use it for everything, internet, mail etc and haven't been told off yet so the fair use must be quite generous! I wouldn't be without it. I don't insure via the provider though, that's way too expensive, I've got the insurance through my bank account "extras".

I'd say go for it.
 
thought apple filed against htc for 20 patent infringements if that goes ahead and apple win where will that leave htc users ????
i could be wrong (it happens alot)

True, but then 16 is still classed as a child so in that case the UK allows child labour. It would be totally different if they were employing 10 year olds, but they are not...

Won't make a difference.It would only affect the US if at all and tbh Apple are just making a scene, I doubt anything will come of it. HTC will drag out a load of patents themselves and it will either go one of two ways..

1. Apple vs Palm: Apple try and get the pre banned by touting a load of patents but Palm fight back with a load themselves that could have dumped Apple out of the phone market. Both sides ceasefired.

2. Apple vs Nokia: Nokia file an injunction with Apple for using its tech without its consent and Apple drag out a load of things to try and save themselves. Court case ongoing....

Is it me or is Apple constantly strting patent fights with other companies? The general consensus is that Apple are worried about HTC and Android in particular and instead of competing are trying to chop the head off the snake... Google have just waded in on the side of HTC as well... Could be interesting.

Ha. Thing is I do kind of agree. I've avoided apple and ipods for years, always going with what I thought were better alternatives (iRiver for my mp3 player as an example).

Time to cave in and see what all the fuss is about I guess. I went and looked at HTC hero and iphones in the flesh yesterday - and just the look of the iphone had me, the HTC Hero looked like a toy.
And before anyone says you shouldn't just go off how things look, well I am a photographer, so I do that quite a lot ;)

You actually like the look of the iPhone? It's shiny but looks really old and dated now IMO. I assume Apple are going to update the looks when they release the next one or it'll really suffer I think.

In terms of looks - It's a design classic. Even the most hardened anti apple crowd admit it looks sexy in terms of design, surely?

I also don't think they will (or should) update the looks with the next model. I'd wager they'd only change if they did a complete 360 and came out with something completely new and bizarre (which everyone else would eventually copy a year later anyway). Given that the brand new ipad just looks like a big iphone, they have an established 'brand' design that they shouldn't mess with I reckon.

...Hark at me, I sound like an Apple fanboy. Excuse whilst I pop out and give myself a quick beating...

P.S. To quote Charlie Brooker on the new 'ipad': "An iphone for people who are too lazy to hold one near their face". Classic.
 
Na, I disagree, it looked good three years ago but now it does look dated. There is way to much bezel around the screen for it to look really good. It also looks really plain, however I do admit it does look uite nice from the back.

IMO they need to make the screen bigger to cover almost the entire front and make it slightly thinner maybe. The standard design is good, just it needs some tweaks to actually look really nice any more.

Good move, you will not regret it.

Mine runs loads of apps important to my business: organiser/diary, sat nav, pic library, blog software, ebay apps, Tweetdeck, Skype, guitar tuner, trip trackers, project & task managers etc and has never let me down.

Also Youtube HD on an iPhone is off the chart amazing to watch.

So much you can do with them: think of them as a compact netbook with a built-in phone. And if you use MobileMe and a iMac then all the better.

Did the same myself. Went to iPod first (good move for extras availability), then iMac and now iPhone. Now use my 40gb iRiver as a pocket hard drive.

Seriously, all are top products. Great support too when you buy Applecare.

Having just spent the last week trying to make the same decision I went for the Nokia as it really is only the apps that make the iPhone and how many of them do you really need, another thing that eventually swung it for me was just how many people have one and for me that makes it uncool, every banker, every office bod and now mums pushing buggies, seriously not cool!!
 
I've had HTC phones since the original O2 XDA many years ago and I finally bought a iPhone 3GS 16GB on PAYG from O2 about a month ago. I've also paid them £15 to unlock it officially from their network so I could use my vodafone sim in it as I got increasingly frustrated with my HTC Touch Pro which was painfully slow. I figured that with the 4G round the corner why start a new 18 or 24 month contract when I could sell the iPhone 3GS unlocked in a few months and not loose too much and then get the 4G if I wanted it or just keep the 3GS and get a cheaper monthly contract.

I certainly wouldn't be without my iPhone now :D. Yep I have many apps that I don't need but some are just too cool not to have paid the 59p ;)
 
Dont know much about the HTC but customer service and support from apple is great, my iphone developed a fault, took it to an apple shop, they diagnosed it infront of me and replaced it with a new one and an apology, that said, not so good that it went down.....
Am considering getting an APPLE MAC comp as they do free instore tutorials for all their products.
 
best phone i've ever had! but if you can wait, 4th ed is out in the summer :)

I'll still only use it for a few calls, a few texts, internet and satnav. Sorry, but the spirit level app in my Nokia 5800 and new N97 mini has been a god send. Sooooo many times I have used it. You'll wonder how you ever did without it. :D
 
I still have a XDA2 - use it as a pda only for sat nav now ***
 
Well, I'm a few days into owning the new iphone, and i must say, I think it's bloody great.

After an initial nightmare trying to set up my email account (problems which in the end were my own stupidity) it's all running nicely.

The only thing that's put me off so far is sitting next to 2 chavvy 'ladies' on the train the other day, who both had iphones and were flouting them. Made me feel dirty :D

I have to say.. you can show off your photos so well with the iphone... ;) And for those that say why would you even want to.. many have booked shoots as a result ;) Pays for itself!

Just you wait til the iPad comes out then! Should be amazing to show images to clients (so long as you can get shots from camera to pad fairly painlessly!)

I can't decide at the moment whether to go for an iphone and ditch my current mobile broadband deal I have for home, or keep the broadband and wait for an ipad.

ipad and iphone will cost about the same over a year to run I think (including all data charges etc) but I'm torn. iphone now, or ipad in april/may/june/whenever Apple decide to release it over here!
