Go on.

Thinking of the 12 month tesco contract for £20 a month. Initial bigger layout but then can switch to a sim only deal after a year.

Or should I get an HTC? - which one (android OS preferable for the downloads etc)

Far too may options to choose from. I want low monthly costs, and free internet which I think they all have now?

Depends on what you want to do with it. I got the HTC Touch Pro2 in preference to the iPhone because it has a huge slide out keyboard, great conference calling and a noise cancelling mike/speakerphone (yes, I do work on mine as opposed to dicking about :)). It also has a big screen and the Win Mobile OS is buried deep beneath HTC's own "TouchFLO 3D" system so the IU is nice. Downside is size but I just do not like pecking away at on screen keyboards like a demeted chicken so I don't mind it being a bit on the large side. Battery life is around 2 days.

That said, if you don't mind having no keyboard, the iPhone is a cracking device.

Those slide out keyboards - how easy are they to use does it make a difference if you are a touch typist whose fingers know where the keys are without thinking or a two finger typist who has to look :) ?

On the HTC I have, the keys are very well spaced (I have cumberland sausage like fingers) so I can get a bit of speed up when typing on it :)

It will take over your life & make you wonder exactly how you managed to survive before owning it!

And yes, I have an iPhone!

It's impossible. Here are the ways in which an iPhone WILL improve your life.

1: It will make you better looking.

2: You will instantly be better in bed.

3: It actually gives you an aura of power and strength

4: It makes those around you without an iPhone look meek & dull

5: You will command higher wages as a result of your instant likability as a result of the phone

6: You will find that when you whip it out in a crowd, mouths will literally fall to the ground, the gasps will amuse.

It's not called the Jesus phone for nothing. Just don't drop it. Or get it wet. Or leave it in a bag without a case. Or stand on it. I'm on my 9th and I feel 9 times greater than those who have only owned 1. People see it too, I am iPhone god.

Gary.

my daughter just bought one.. PAYG 340 quid... my draw dropped thats for sure :(

iPhone is very very expensive and if you don't hack it, you miss out on lots of functionality....

(for example, spotify has 7 million music tracks, but Apple lock you from using using it and surfing the net at the same time. Yet you can do this with Apples iPod app. There are loads more little things like this.)

You can only run one application at a time.

If you want to know positives, start a new thread, because the positives outway the bad.... I had to say that.... sorry!

Sent from my hacked iPhone...

I had to replace mine on the insurance as I had it stolen, £449.

Very expensive but the best phone ever. Up till now I have always changed phones every 6 months or so, but not any more. Extremely happy with the iphone.

Everybody is different. I have a HTC Hero, it runs as many apps as I want, at the same time if I want. I can download whatever app I want- not just ones approved by apple. I can send mms (ok, you can now on the iphone, 3 years later), have 3G that actually works (o2- if your reading, you need to upgrade your network!).

Another vote for the HTC Hero. I have one and my son has an iPhone. In my opinion and his opinion, the HTC is a better device.

I do prefer the iPhone styling but that's about it.

Checkout the upcoming HTC Desire. Better processor than the Hero and it will be awesome.

I am due for an upgrade. I know absolutely nothing about phones. Who makes the HTC? Can you get SatNav software on the HTC? I have satnav on my Nokia N95 and it is the one feature I don't want to lose. I'd rather lose the ability to make phone calls on my phone.

Err, HTC make the HTC. Unsure about SatNav- it has google maps, and built in GPS which is pretty good. HTC Desire looks even better, but I just couldn't wait (N95 was driving me crazy)

OK, didn't realise that was a make. Never heard of it before.

No worries :) I haven't heard of them before all my friends moved from iphone to them. Seems like they "burst" onto the mobile market pretty quickly.

Features I love that iphone doesn't have (far as I know):

Custom home screens, with various different sized widgets/shortcuts/whatever I want
7 Screens per layout
Layouts for work/home/whatever/many as you want

Layouts can be automatic using an app called "locale"- when you arrive at work, it switches to work mode- with certain backgrounds, or ringtones, or out of offices, etc etc etc.

Must say I have pretty much narrowed down my choices to a 16GB Iphone 3GS on the tesco 12 month contract, or the HTC hero.

iphone would be £20 per month but about £350 upfront to buy.

HTC hero on offer with 3network at the mo for £24 per month and the phone iteslef is free.

Thoughts?

Get the N97 or the N97 Mini then. You'll be able to run Nokia free for life sat nav with voice guidance. The N95 is such a great phone I think you'd be disappointed in anything less.

Sorry to threadjack... but this has caught my interest as well.

What is it like for web based e-mails, web browsing, and texts?

Does it allow you to expand the keyboard like iphone by changing orientation?

I run a Mac with Mobile Me and Google apps for my business, it's a no brainer for me as it all syncs absolutely perfectly.

HTC have been around for a long time but in the UK, they have previuosly been rebadged by the UK networks. only the more recent models carry the HTC brand.

The N95 has been a great phone but it's just so sloooooowwwwww.

To be honest I probably don't really need all the apps that you get on these fancy smart phones. It's just that everyone else has them and raves about them so I want them. I'll still only use it for a few calls, a few texts, internet and satnav. I don't really need a spirit level on my phone, I have a perfectly good spirit level in the shed, actually I have 5 of them.

How can you not need a spirit level with you at all times. I mean come on, what sort of man are you!?

I'm exactly the same as you. I don't really need one at all. I've heard of one app though that lets lets you communicate, in real time, via the means of the human voice, with another human being. Imagine that.

I use google mail- the build in app for that is excellent. Web browsing is excellent- but you can install opera mini if thats more to your taste. Txt's are arranged into conversations- which I find really useful.

Turn the phone and the keyboard gets bigger, just like the iphone. Go into a orange store and try one out :)

sorry for thread jacking

could anyone with an iphone 3gs tell me if you can use your own custom ringtones? as when i had one of the 1st Iphones this couldnt be done, only the iphones standard ringtones were able to be used. i have a Nokia n97 at the minute but i am thinking of going back to the Iphone as i miss all the apps that are available. Also has the ringing volume been improved on it?

yes it can be done, but not as straight forward as selecting your mp3.

bout a 5 min play with itunes etc etc

Have a look at the new motorolas running android software. I have the dext and think everything is brilliant except for the battery life. The new motorola milestone (only available through carphone warhouse at the minute) is supposed to be up there with the best of the new smart phones so definately worth a look.

PMSL.

Actually, the N97 doesn't come with a spirit level, but you can dowload one if you want to.:D

Or a 'Spin The Bottle' - handy at parties! :naughty:

Not really, most smartphones retail at around £450-500. My old K850 retailed at £400 and that was a dumb phone. :)

OP have a look at the HTC Desire and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, both Android phones and very different to each other TBH. The only problem is they are either only just coming out or out in a month or two.

The other option is the HTC HD2, an excellent phone and thinner, more powerful and with a much longer battery life than the iPhone (same with the Desire and X10).:)

You also won't get ripped off with a contract (that's where the iPhone is expensive. On some contracts it can actually work out cheaper if you buy the phone sim free/PAYG and then use a sim only tariff!)

As for the Hero I wouldn't go for it tbh, its about a year old now and starting to get dated. The Desire is pretty much the updated Hero with uprated hardware and newest Sense software. :)

Haha, HTC have been making phones since the beginning of time. They specialise in smartphones though so not many people out of "business" circles really ever heard of them (I hadn't until a couple of years ago).

They also make a huge number of phones and devices for other companies, for example the Xperia X1 and the Nexus 1 as well as pretty much all the old O2 XDA phones (most HTC phones were/are sold under the other names) as well as the T-Mobile G1 and the Pulse etc. etc.:p

I had a good look at contracts for the iphone and I couldnt believe how little movement their is from providers on price and contract. I think its probably a mix of little price movement from apple combined with the high demand of the thing means why should they move on price?

Although the iphone is good, does the price reflect the true quality of the item or is it all hype and the resultant supply/demand?

I ain't going to read all these posts but if you like losing business then buy an iphone, mine drops calls even when the reception is good, and talking of good reception the iphone is carp compared to my old mobiles in fact so bad that I pulled one out of the cupboard the other day and have stopped using the iphone.
If you want a plaything then get an iphone, if you value your customers and are earning money from calls then get something else imo

If I may be indulgent also please.

If you can get a free iphone on a c£30 month contract, why do people pay so much for them second hand. I'm assuming you need the internet and a decent inclusive call package. Surely sims for that must be at least £20month?

I'm not really a mobile phone user and maybe it becomes clear when you are on contract, but I would love to know how the smart people work this.

Again, apologies as it's not my thread, but perhaps related.

Graham
