I have to convert some images into Adobe RGB 98. I usually use sRGB and edit my photos with Paintshop Pro 7. I have a copy of Photoshop which I don't use (mainly because I hate it and can't be bothered to learn another package).

As an experiment, I have converted one to RGB 98 with photoshop and it looks awful.

The dilemma I have is that I don't know how to desaturate with Photoshop to make it look right in RGB 98. I don't think I can convert to RGB 98 with Paintshop pro.

Can anyone suggest what I can do?

BTW I don't understand colour spaces or print technology at all, so any suggestions would have to be very simple.

Many thanks,

Jenny

I'm guessing that you are "assigning" the profile and not converting it, hence the colour change. when you convert the profile there is no discernrable colour change.

Though I'm not sure why you would want to convert from srgb to Adobe 1998RGB as you are gaining nothing colourwise!

AdobeRGB (1998) is used for printing - pictures using that colour space may not look good in your browser - depending on the browser you use. You almost always use AdobeRGB for print and sRGB for web use. Note for print I mean pictures being printed in newspapers etc - and not photo prints. Most photo prints are made from sRGB. HTH

Thanks, Andrew and Paul for your responses. I said I did not understand this stuff, but your explanations are certainly helping.

The problem is that I have only ever used sRGB for web use and any printing that I do, which is obviously correct. However, I have to send some images that should be "colour profiled/corrected using a calibrated monitor and utilising Adobe RGB 98 colour space".

So, I opened one of my images in Photoshop and changed the colour settings to RGB 98 and the image looks awful. Not sure what to do about it.

Jenny, you need to set PS back to srgb then open the image in PS then go to Edit > Convert To Profile and select these setting as shown.
