Hi guys

I'm the proud owner of an EOS 600D which is an entry camera for me at this level and which I've had for around a year or so and to which I've added an 18-200 zoom lens. The clarity of the pictures it attains are fantastic but the problem I've got is that I've managed to take some nice pictures using some of the guidance I've read on this forum and elsewhere BUT half of them were taken as JPEG and half were taken as CR2 where the settings were mistakenly and unknowingly altered now although I've read that I maybe better off for editing purposes shooting in CR2 I actually wish to convert the pictures taken as CR2 into JPEG files, is there any free programmes available that will allow me to do this and if so can anyone recommend one that is easy to use?

Many thanks.

Hi

Do you have the cd that came with you camera, if you do that might have the software included to convert to jpeg.

I use nikon and I think cr2 is the raw format for Canon.

What other software do you use for photo editing? This may also be able to convert the file.

The DPP software which came with the camera is designed for converting raw (CR2) files.

I'm afraid i don't have the software sep9001/Stewart, the camera wasn't new when I bought it but i'll pay a visit to the Canon website and see what they say, thanks.

Just realised I have Picasa 3 already installed on my PC, when I get time I might see if that carries a file converter.

As far as I know, Picasa 3 only 'sees' the embedded Jpeg in the RAW file, which is normally a Basic/Low quality version, and does not allow you to work on the RAW file itself. You get none of the benefits of a RAW file, none destructive colour correction, changes to exposure and of course all the information that the camera recorded to edit with. You do get none destructive editing with Picasa of course, but it is with the Jpeg.

You may be able to put the images on a memory card and back in the camera, to save the RAW files as Jpegs, which may allow you to choose the quality, which would be preferable to using the Jpeg embedded in the RAW file.

If you can get a copy of Canon's Digital Picture Professional, that will give you full processing options of the RAW file.

That's very helpful indeed redhead17 I'll try to track down a copy on EBay, thank you.
