Conversion to black and white

Whenever I try to convert something to mono it always ends up looking nothing like i fancy. I try and play with the settings in cs4 but can never make it right, any tips?

Silver FX Pro

I use a set of actions or Silver FX pro for B&W's. It's not easy to do a decent B&W is Photoshop unless you go delving into several layers.
