Found in another discussion forum. Is tonemapping overused?

It's hardly controversial just looks like another case of people with a superiority complex bashing people for doing things they did. For full effect the author should have included the selective colour slump and the long exposure doldrums then he would have hit all the look how much better I am than you cliches.

No.. it's funny... because it's true.

I trust stats and graphs like I trust a rattlesnake ( I know its humourist but still,,, )

It's dull is what it is...not particularly this graph as this isn't really all that much about HDR but photography in general and it's quite true in what it presents but what is dull is belittling other photographers for playing or experimenting...it's a nasty little trait :(

You may wish to revisit and re-assess the graph a year later :)

Only if someone adds selective colour and a motorway light trail otherwise how will I judge my progress! Let's not over look the classic scape goats and just focus on HDR it's just not fun.

It's a joke... stop being so serious. Perosnally I think it's true... but it's still a joke.. much as this thread is.

Looks like a graph of someone trying to force their opinion onto someone who has a different one.....now...where have I seen that before ;)

Nurse.. 100cc of Humour... STAT!.. move... we've got people dying in here.

If you read my post I wasn't particularly aiming my comment at the content of the opening post but at the very real issue belittling others for what they do or how they partake in photography...I'm more than happy with my ability to understand jokes that's...well most jokes and humour

Sat well within the HDR hole here if my recent showings are much to go by... Out of the wind and rain down here though!

;)

Everyone is entitled to their opinions... and to voice them... whether you like their opinions or not. No one is directly poking fun at any individuals here. We're just making a wry observation on the stages of photographic development.

It's amusing that those who have already gone through this and come out of the other side can recognise it for being true... yet those that are still playing with techniques and gear for the sake of it are offended by others merely pointing this out.

Tough.

You know something David so often I find myself thankful of your knowledge of photography that you often bring to the forum alas all to often you have to spoil that good that you bring...I've already said it largely truthful what is in the graph, however while there is no direct poking of fun in this thread, it does happen all to often

, it does happen all to often

Just as the usual bunch decry anything that's art as being a load of [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER], pretentious and elitist just because they're too stupid to understand it?

yeah.. annoying isn't it. Reverse snobbery is OK though it seems :)

If people find my knowledge useful... I'm happy. It's still useful if they don't like me though... so I'm still happy.

It's just a joke  some people take themselves far too seriously. I know plenty of gifted photographers who practice HDR .........we'll some anyway

"gearfaggotry"? Really?
But it's funny or should that be mildly offensive? Apparently I've missed the point if the thread so maybe this term falls under the banter catch all for simpletons?

The bit that I've bolded there is the biggest issue David, some people don't really have an interest in the art they simply take enjoyment out of taking at least to them nice photos, I probably fall in to that category a lot of the time...is it to you or anyone for that matter to look down on people for that? Because I really don't think it is and it's a horrendous attitude to have in my opinion that someone is consider stupid for not have interests matching yours...

I think your being a little unfair. I don't think David is calling people stupid because they don't have an interest in art but rather the inane comments they sometimes make when discussing some award winning photos because they don't comprehend the concept

Doesn't matter Matt. Whenever like minded people and I are having a conversation about work we admire the thread always gets bombed by the usual people who start making the same stupid comments: "It's all crap... ", "Emperor's new clothes", and the perennial favourite, "Those that can, do, and those that can't teach". No one seems to mind that though, as they're in the majority... all boys together huh? When the tables are turned, we're being elitist and you all start crying like big girls. LOL

I'm voicing an opinion I'm entitled to.. I'm speaking my mind. I'm not calling anyone names, unlike the way I get called names in threads like the one described above. I'm not being personal. I'm voicing my opinion about certain styles of photography I find vacuous and empty. That's my right. If you are a purveyor of the type of work I'm decrying, then yeah, you're probably not going to like that. So what? I'm not going pretend I like it when I don't, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to voice my opinion about it for fear of upsetting someone, as that would be undemocratic and unfair of this forum to support that way of thinking. If you don't like my opinions, then so what? You don't have any right to suggest I shouldn't voice them.. where the **** are we? North Korea?

My favourite inane comment is "It's a joke... stop being so serious." I hate it when people tell other people they're not allowed to hold opinions, don't you?

Look at any humour you like, and it's very common to have someone as the butt of the joke. When it's politicians or celebrities, we laugh. When it's us, we complain. :) You're upset because you identify yourselves as the subject of the joke. You'll get over it.

The graph made me chuckle and seems reasonably accurate based on my own personal experience. I fell into the hdr hole about 6 years ago for a few months but mercifully found a way out. Not quite found out where I am on the orange line as i have old film camera gearfaggotry.

We've all been through it (although it wasn't HDR for me.. I'm too old).. which is why it's funny for some of us, and insulting for others.

"gearfaggotry"? Really?

It's probably American in origin... they've not woken up to the fact that terms like that insult about 1/5th of the population :) Mind you... kids here call anything they don't like "gay" so I suppose we're no better.

I think I committed my crimes against taste in the following order:

Discovered the saturation slider, forgot about subtlety
Selective colour
Gratuitous long exposures of flowing water
Soft focus
HDR
"Enthusiastic" eye-popping and skin smoothing
High-pass sharpening & details enhancement

Lots of these things there's actually nothing wrong with if they're not gratuitous or unsubtle.

I'm now trying to pay less attention to gimmicks and PP techniques and trying to focus more on communication. Getting a story or an abstract idea across in a single image.

I know more with no sense of humour ;)

Has been posted before, not sure it caused so much upset then though! I like it!

I find this quiet funny...

Seems that i jump straight to "find an old photography" by avoiding the "HDR hole".

Althought I'm not sure the quality of you photography rise until you die, there a point when senility and hand shaking must bring your photography down...

I hear the HDR hole has opened up in the M2 as a result of the bad weather - the motorway is closed to stop cars from falling into it and coming out horribly over saturated ;) :D

I'm somewhere at 'Found a film camera (again)' / 'Dammit, I suck'. I am stuck in a perpetual film/digital loop.

Personally I think that graph's hilarious and I can't for the life in me understand why people so serious about stuff like this. Why choose to be offended by it? Why take it as a personal slur on your abilities? Lighten up!

That graph's funny and it is true for a lot of people. We go through phases, we evolve, we learn, we progress, we love what we do, we hate what we do, we find a way through it, we continue. Welcome to life, that's how it works. Why not have a laugh about it?

Too much damned seriousness going on here.

Well it made me laugh, the laughter of recognition I believe it's called!
