Hello all. A complete newbie question here where lights are concerned.

If I wanted to use my 5d Mk2 to control studio lights what settings do I use on the camera for the camera to talk to the lights? The lights had a remote trigger which was fitted to my hotshoe and my assumption was when I fired the camera the lights would work. They didn't. When I tried looking at the speedlight controls on the camera it said I needed to attach a speedlight and turn it on???

Sorry for the silly question and the fact that I'm sketchy with the details, it's just that I have the chance to use proper lights and I'm trying to get the camera to talk to them.

Any help very much appreciated.

Normally a remote trigger works. New batteries needed perhaps? Does it have a test button on the transmitter? Is the receiver switched on?

The transmitter is the part attached to the camera yes? I hit the test button and the lights did indeed work.

Is it something to do with the function I need to use on the camera, I was shooting in Manual?

Yes. Not that I'm aware of. Did you have the transmitter pushed properly into the hotshoe?

Possibly not seated right on the camera, should work as you have it set up. I'd check that the contacts are all clean and it is fitted correctly.
