Hi Guys,

I have a Calumet x-large softbox which I would like to try with 'continuous lighting'.

Calumet say they have no continuous lights that would accept a softbox, even though speedrings are available for different manufactures.

Anyone tried to do this and overcome the problem?

Continuous lights, such as this one, have their own softbox for a reason - the fluorescent lamps that are used are far too large physically to fit through any speedring designed for a flash head - this photo should make it clear.

I suppose that there could be one somewhere that takes just a single lamp, in which case it might fit - but it wouldn't have enough power to be useful

Thanks for the quick reply Gary.

Thought there may have been something where the speedring or 'other mounting bracket' was attached towards the rear of the continuous head, enabling most of the head to sit inside the softbox.

Looks as though I'm stuck with flash heads then.

Hardly stuck. You'll get far superior results with a decent head strapped to the box anyway.
I have the same model, well, all three in the range to be honest. Cracking boxes and well worth the outlay.

Cheers Michael,

was just wanting to try something different, don't seem to be getting much light from the modelling lamp when fitted to this box, although flash is fine - what size light you using with the x-large box?

I have the Lencarta Elite Pro 600 and 300 models, as well as the SmartFlash. I tend to use the 600 or 300. If you're intending to buy specifically for this, go for the 600, it's a big area!. A second head could be the 300.

Between you and me, and whilst no one else is reading this. I'm thinking about getting a second x-large to use on location. I'm wondering if it may just be too much of a bind assembling and disassembling on location. The medium box would likely be ok. I often use the medium one boomed overhead for small product shots. Nice :)

...they do take a bit of putting together

Currently have the Elinchrom BX 400's, but was looking for a light specifically for this.

Not sure whether to stick with the same brand, as I can get a speedring to fit any, but would it make it easier for triggers?

Cheers Michael,

already have the Pocket Wizards, will just look for an additional Elinchrom I think, keep everything uniform ;)

Certainly make things easier for you when swapping modifiers about ;)
