Content Aware Fill...some advise please :)

With content aware fill in photoshop is there a way of selecting the area of the image I would like to use for the fill? Sometimes this tool is like my best friend and does exactly what I'd like it to and others I find it really frustrating!!

If its any help the way I do it is to use the quick mask to mask the area I don,t want CA to pick up , do new layer via copy and use the CA tool on that layer.
The only difficulty is making sure you get enough background for the CA tool to work
