Contax lens on Canon body

He used an adaptor. Read this for an example of how it's done.

I am using the lenses with adaptors on the EOS bodies, with manual focus, and maual step down metering.

The reason to do this are quite a number:

1) In some cases you get better performance then the Canon or 3rd party lenses. In the case of the Zeiss 50 F1.7, you get arguably the sharpest 50 made by anyone ever, but for the price of a Canon 50 F1.8. Also on the wide end you get much better performance then what is avaliable in EOS mount, such as the Zeiss 28 F2.8, Zeiss 21 F2.8 (EXPENSIVE), Leica 19 and so on.

2) In many cases there are old manual lenses that can be had for very reasonable prices, that gives top grade performance. Most of the Olympus OM line is this way, eg: OM 28 F3.8 + adaptor will run you less then £60, and give you about as good performance as 24/8-70 F2.8@28mm, or 24-105 IS@28, and better performance then the 17-40 F4 @28 (I own all the lenses listed above).

3) Drawing styles differ between lens makers. An image taken with a Pentax 77 limited, looks different to a EF 85 F1.8, and different again to a Leica 90 F2 R. In some situations you just want a different look, this especially applies to portrait/beauty work.

4) Most of these alt primes (mostly I am interested in primes) are much smaller and (usually) lighter then the AF Canon counterparts, so they can make for a lighter kit when walking around a city. This combined with the 5D ability to be used without the battery grip, can be a nice break from carrying 12kg of stuff around all day.

These are the main reasons. Everytime I see an image from the Leica 90 F2 I am reminded of why I use alt lenses, but then I never leave the house without my EF 35 F1.4 either.
