considering Nikon

Hey guys need some help and advice.

I know a tone about Olympus kit and very little when it comes to Nikon kit. considering getting a Nikon set-up to see what its all about. Really like the look of the prime lenses and nearly went for a D90 for my first slr but the price was a little out of my league.

my fav lens Olympus wise is the 50mm F2 Macro and i use the 14-54 2.8f a lot. I know There is a 50mm out there but what can you recommend that would be the same quality as the 14-54? and possible cost involved, ball park figures are cool.

14-54 2.8f

The E-1 has a 2.0x crop factor, yes? So the lens is 28-108mm equivalent on 35mm, so assuming a 1.5x crop factor for nikon you're looking at 18-70 ish.

There's quite a few options for that range including, obviously, the uber-cheap (around £60) 18-70mm 3.5-4.5, although that will lose some speed compared to the 2.8-3.5 of the olympus.

If speed really isn't that much of an issue, then there are a number of longer range zooms that would cover that range too, eg 18-105, 18-200, etc, and they'd give you a bit more reach at the far end.

If speed is important, then Sigma have a 17-70 f2.8-f4 that would be pretty close to a match for about £300.

The nikkor 17-55 would be better quality still (although losing a bit on the far end of the zoom), but you're at around £1000 for that.

50mm macro probably going to equate to something like either the tamron 90mm or tokina 100mm macros.

Don't forget the Nikon 16-85 VR lens. Apparently very good and a step up from the 18-105 kit lens (which is by no means bad).

Darn they seem to be going for the 600 to 700 mark from what I can see.

I thought they were lower these days- MPB has one at 529 and a few others 604-639. Have seen them nearer £500 on private sales but like everything fluctuates a bit I guess.

The one at 529 has 47k. Shutter is rated to 150k although you never know- some fail at 10k and some go to 200k.

D80 and D200 are still good cameras despite their age. D200 built more like your E1.

I take it that the build quality on the D300 is like the D200 and my E1?

No probs, yes MPB are good, have always found them to be fair in their descriptions and customer service fine.

D300 is similar build to D200. Has a nice sturdy feel about it.

Well last weekend i brought a D300 and i have got to say im not disappointed, though i only have a 50mm at the moment so im still looking for a decent zoom.
