Considering an upgrade....but which one? 7Dii or 6D?!

I have a Canon 7D with a Sigma 17-55 f/2.8, Canon 70-200 F/4L and a Canon 100mm Macro.

I was considering an upgrade to the Canon 7D Mk II but spotted the Canon 6D which is cheaper and a FF. I know I'd need to change 2 of my lenses, but I'm not sure which would be better.

I do alot of Landscape, Macro and occasional wildlife where I use the high sped FPS.

However, I cannot make my mind up and don't want to needlessly spend money. One of the drawbacks of my current 7D is the time it takes to process long exposures....it's a painful wait.

So, looking for suggestions please?

Buying new lenses is probably a "needless" expense :( but the 6D excels at landscapes but less so at high speed frame rates (small buffer) but you have two very good Canon lenses both of which will compliment the 6D very well.

The 100mm Macro is an EF-s so I'd need to replace this too!

Do you need to sell your 7D to fund this new body - if not, then possibly an easier decision as I'd opt for the 6D for you landscapes etc and you still have the 7D for wildlife ...

If you need to sell, then it becomes a little more tricky - I suppose it comes down to which of the new bodies suits your needs the most - FF or fast FPS ?

Which model is it, the current Canon 100mm macro lens (2.8 non-L and L) are EF lens and work perfectly with a 6D.

Camera body wise the 6D is a very different beast to the 7D II. If the 7D was a keeper i agree with Andyred get the 6D to compliment it, if its a choice between the a 7DII and 6D choose what's most important to you as both have their weaknesses.

Thanks!

For some reason I thought my 100mm Macro was an EF-s lens, thinking about it, I don't believe it is which is great - but I'd still need to replace the Sigma which is fine as I'd be looking to get a 24-70 or 24-105!

I'm actually considering keeping the 7D as I've been asked to photograph some weddings - of which I've done 2!

The one thing I would say is wait a bit the 6d and 5d mk3 are both quiet old so one would be looking for an announcement soon for replacements. This may make your choice easier

Good point - have you heard/read anything?

Canon do not sell a 100mm EF-S Macro Lens so I would assume that this is a EF lens and would work on the 6D. the only lens that would not work would be the 17-55mm

Yeah - not sure why I thought it was :/

You'll be waiting a year or more, no replacements announced for either camera. As for which camera, the 6D autofocus system is only a slight improvement over the 5D MKII, so it depends how you use the camera. If your a spray and pray shooter when it comes to wildlife ie only care about fps, you'll be disappointed with its performance, however, if you think more about how you capture the shot, then you could live with the limitations of the autofocus system and go FF, or as Andyred suggested keep your 7D

Thanks - I have every intention of keeping my 7D and using that when I need a back up or more FPS.

Which of the 2 packages would be better? 24-70mm or the 24-105mm?

Hi buy a second-hand 5D mkiii would be my choice you get the best of both worlds better frame rate than the 6D better iso capability than the 7D mkii.
and really good autofocus system.

Didn't think of that :) Thanks!

Still need a lens to go with it though.....

The 24-70mm f4 a great lens, it's a improvement over the 24-105mm f4 if you read the reviews

They're not old! I wouldn't expect replacements any time soon. Look at the gaps between 5d mk 2 and 3, 7d mk 1 and 2 etc. They dont update these yearly as per the xxxd bodies! You might be looking at another 3 years.

That said, the 6d centre AF point is very sensitive, and locks and tracks very well and is unbelievably good in low light situations. I've shot a lot of action with it and the AF is surprisingly tasty. The only down side for action is the FPS which has already been mentioned.

The 6D is a cracking camera if you are not concerned about high frames per second and super fast auto focus. As you are keeping the 7D for that I guess that won't be an issue.

The 24-105 is a fantastic sharp lens. You'll get the extra reach and if you are using it for landscapes will you need the extra speed of a 2.8.
The 24-105 is also much smaller and lighter that the 24-70

Edit. Just realised the 24-70 is the new f4. I've not used that lens but the 24-105 is cheaper, longer and a very sharp lens.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I've always fancied a FF and since I'm keeping my 7D, I think the 6D would be a good choice. I was originally going to sell the 7D to fund the upgrade (6D/7Dii) but since I've been given some cash, I think I'll keep it!

:agree: i use 7dmk1 for macro and did have a 5dmk3, if you're looking for image quality then you may be disappointed with a 7dmk2.
5dmk3 must be one of the best all round bodies Canon have made.

Where do you feel your existing 7D lacks the most? If you require better AF tracking, AF @ f/8 and slightly improved IQ and low light performance then go for the 7D MkII. If you want greatly improved IQ and superb low light performance go for the 6D.

I personally didn't use my 7D MkI again after buying a 6D, but I rarely need multi-point AF tracking or >4.5 fps. If you go FF I recommend considering the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. I prefer it to the 24-105L which was bundled as my 6D. The 24-105 is a great kit lens but nothing special in terms of IQ or speed.

Thanks for your input, it does help me work out what I want to do. I don't find the IQ with my 7D that bad, but the time it takes to process a long exposure is doing my head in. A 30s exposure can take up to 1 min. I also don't used the high FPS that often and when I do its for macro in the garden - have you used the 6D in this respect?

The 6D is currently my #1 choice - 5DIII is too much and I wouldn't use it to its full potential.

Do you have long exposure noise reduction on in camera?

Ahh great, I'll disable it and see how it goes. To be honest, until you mentioned it, I didn't think about this one or remembered I'd enabled it!
